Barry Bonds
Full
Name: Barry Lamar Bonds Barry Lamar Bonds was born on July 24, 1964, in Riverside, California. As the son of former player Bobby Bonds, to say his childhood was strongly influenced by baseball was an understatement. He has several great, Major League Baseball players in his bloodline: his father Bobby (once an All Star), distant cousin of Hall of Famer and Mr. October himself - Reggie Jackson, and his godfather Willie Mays, who is considered by many to be one of the greatest baseball players to ever play the game. Bonds attended Serra High School in San Mateo. There, he was a three sport athlete in baseball, football, and basketball. After graduating in 1982, Bonds was drafted in the 2nd round of the amateur draft by the San Francisco Giants. Not meeting eye-to-eye in the negotiations, Bonds instead chose to attend Arizona State University, where he ended up playing for 3 years for the Sun Devils. In the June, 1985 amateur draft, Bonds was selected in the 1st round (6th pick overall) by the Pittsburgh Pirates. Shortly thereafter, Bonds had a minor stint with the now defunct Hawaii Islanders (the Pirates' minor league system at the time) before being called up to the big leagues where he has established himself as the player that he is today.
