In Loving Memory - Israel Kamakawiwo`ole

Lately, the "In Loving Memory - Israel Kamakawiwo`ole Guestbook" has been a difficult task to upkeep on a regular basis. As a result, e-Hawaii.com was generous enough to offer some space where the guestbook process is somewhat automated. I hope you enjoy the "new" look. My apologies for any inconvenience(s) this has caused.

I feel cheated because I first heard Isreal's music just about a month ago. I was almost brought to tears by the sweetness of his voice and the powerfull message of his words. My thoughts and best wishes go out to his family and friends. I think the world has lost a great spirit. The legacy of his recordings will be a small reminder of the great loss we have all had. Aloha to you Iz.

My husband and I were introduced to the heavenly, haunting music of Iz in February when we visited Hawaii (where my husband was born and raised). We purchased all his CD's that were available here once we returned home and have played them over and over again. Our deepest and heartfelt sympathy to his wife, daughter and entire family. What a terrific loss they have to be feeling - may God bless and comfort them.

Bruddah Iz played at our Christmas party in 1994. I work at Aloha Airlines and I remember his performance vividly. He made an unreal impression on me that night because it was the first and only time I ever saw him play his music; first time I ever saw the man in person. What caught me off guard was that the man was totally down to earth. He spoke of childhood stories and even told jokes (of the adult nature, I might add) in between his songs. He talked to the entire ballroom like he was talking to his best friend. Then, he would jump into a song (like White Sandy Beach or Sea of Love) and just mesmerize the entire audience with his smooth, everlasting voice. His voice is classic Hawaiian. I will always remember where I was on June 26 when I first heard the news like how I remember where I was when I heard that Elvis was gone or the Challenger exploded. His passing affected me in a way I never thought it could. To his family, much aloha. I will always listen to his music and smile.

I bought Israel's latest CD "N Dis Life" in early June after returning from a Hawaiian vacation. I had never heard of Israel or his music before, but I was longing for some true Hawaiian music that captured the spirit of the islands and the Hawaiian people. I found such music in Israel's CD and have listened to it over and over again in the last 2 months and have enjoyed it immensely. I was very saddened to read here of his death. Someone quoted in an article that the world was just getting to know more about Hawaiian music and culture because of Iz. He certainly touched me. I'm very sad he won't be here to make more of that beautiful music.

My first exposure to Iz's music was in a small town in Port Townsend, Washington. Being an island boy (Oahu) I recongnized the music as Hawaiian. What was striking was the smooth, peaceful calm of the voice. He was a gifted artist and a talent much too young to have been lost.

Hawaiians always give from the heart. Iz was a perfect example of that. I was able to see some of the tribute that was aired on TV (thru video). Hawaiians again giving from their heart. Iz n dis life you gave so much to the Hawaiian people . Alot of mainland people don't understand how come the Hawaiian people can be so nice or giving, its just that aloha spirit. Our culture is special and Iz showed others just how special. Aloha bruddah.

His music will always be a part of me. His sense of humor. His aloha spirit. The way Bruddah IZ played his ukulele will always be with me. In a sense, he will never be apart from me. Although right now I cannot shake his hand or give him a hug or thank him in person for all his beautiful music. Bruddah IZ will always there, in melody, and in memory.

You have left behind a lot of love and inspiration. But the main thing you left and gave so freely was faith. Faith to beleive that the Hawaiian people do matter and have a right to speak-out. Hawaiians do have a responsibility to care for thier children and bring them up right. With love and kindness you gave hope and belief that all things are possible through JESUS CHRIST and to those who believe. I LOVE YOU WITH ALL MY HEART AND THANK YOU FOR YOUR NEVER ENDING "SPEAKING FROM THE HEART" AND TELLING IT LIKE IT "IZ." I happened to come upon this page while viewing the Hawai‘ian community. It’s been a while since the passing of this extroardinary man. When I heard the news from my wife, she was in tears, as was myself. This man was an icon in the Hawai‘ian community. Not only in the islands, but here where I reside in the Bay Area. Our canoe club, Kamali‘i ‘o Ke Kai, and the Northern Outrigger Canoe Association, paid tribute and dedicated one regatta to Bruddah Iz. Seeing him in concert was a special privilage. His kind and soothing voice will be greatly missed.
