In Loving Memory - Israel Kamakawiwo`ole

Lately, the "In Loving Memory - Israel Kamakawiwo`ole Guestbook" has been a difficult task to upkeep on a regular basis. As a result, e-Hawaii.com was generous enough to offer some space where the guestbook process is somewhat automated. I hope you enjoy the "new" look. My apologies for any inconvenience(s) this has caused.

I unfortunately like many other posts on here only came to know him after his death as a result of the movie "Finding Forrester" with the song "Somewhere Over the Rainbow". That version/variation of the song is the only one I've ever heard that is in the same league Louis Armstrong's version of "What a Wonderful World". I bought the soundtrack to the movie because of that song and because I love Miles Davis' music alot as well.

I found alot of mp3's of Iz online yesterday that are great as well so I'm going to pick up a couple of his CD's later today. I'd encourage anyone who loves "Over The Rainbow" to check out some of his other music as well.

Anyway, as another post I read stated, hearing this man's sweet soul speaking through his voice in that song makes it obvious that somehow, somewhere, he is indeed still alive and smiling at this very moment as you're reading this. Thank you Iz.

I am in total awe of the gentle sounds that I have only heards snips of on Amazon.com. I wish that I had been aware of his music long before now. I have ordered CDs after hearing "Over the Rainbow" from the music of "Meet Joe Black." I am sorry that we will not be hearing new recording of his beautiful voice, but at least we are privileged to hear his romance with music through the gift of technology.

My husband & I just discovered Iz's beautiful music the night before last while watching "Meet Joe Black". We found his web site today & raced to store to buy his Facing Future CD. It truly touched our hearts & souls! After listening to it from beginning to end, I got back on the web site to read more about this incredible person & realized that today was the fifth anniversary of his passing. (Pretty amazing coincidence! ) His beautiful soul had touched me so deeply that I found my self crying my eyes out at my computer over his loss. He will live on forever in all of our hearts. Thank you for your beautiful music Iz & I hope to meet you on the other side some day! Mahalo Joanne

I just discovered who sang that soul moving Music from the Grand finaly of E.R., Last Night 06/24/02. I played This song (Over the rainbow) for 4 hours this Morning, as I drove to Work. When I first heared this song by IZ, it made me Cry as It was my Mom's Most faverite song in the World. and When I heard this Angelic Voice Singing this, I broke Down! Remembering My Mother.

When I came home from work today I decided to go on the internet to find out More of this Man with the Voice of an Angel, only to find that he'd already passed on to Heaven, on the same day I lost my Mother. and I also found that IZ, and I was born on the Same Day. I feel lucky for me because I now have IZ's Music in my hart, and can hear him until I meet him in Heaven and can hear him sing with all the ages of Angels. How Happy all you must be to have had the privlage to have known and loved him.

Be strong all his Children and family, because you will all be together again in god's Time.

With Love!

Rich.

Israel's haunting, eerie melodic tones have been flaoting around me like a vague nimbus for years without me really zeroing in on what I was hearing. Then this Spring the television show 'ER' used IZ's Somewhere Over The Rainbow/What A Wonderful World to it's dramatic perfection. I then did a search on the Net and all the sounds snapped into place for me... Meet Joe Black, Finding Forrester, eToys.com, a trip that I made to Fiji for my Honeymoon... it seems to me that his soulful intonations have been a part of my life for so long... I now know what has to be added to my life's music library, and somehow, am certain that it always was and will be... keep paddling that canoe, we'll all eventually be pulled to you bruddah IZ.

I am Hawaiian at heart thats why I love Iz and everything he stands for. His wife and family must be awfully proud of Iz as his music still lives on even here in Pennsylvania.

Aloha.

I just wanted to say how important Bruddah IZs music is to myself and my son Brennan (5). We listen to his CDs all the time, and because of that, Brennan seems to have more of an appreciation for Hawaii each day. He said this morning that when he grows up, he would like to teach people Hawaiian Culture so that Bruddah IZ would be happy. He once asked me if he was Hawaiian, because he was born here. It was hard to explain to a three year old. But a friend of ours told him that he was not Hawaiian blood, but Hawaiian heart. I think Bruddah IZ would have liked that.

We recently traveled to the Mainland, driving across Oklahoma and parts of California, and in each rental car, we listened to Bruddahs tape. We truly felt as though we had brought a bit of Hawaii with us, and couldnt wait to return.

Isreal is our Hawaiian Supa'man, and will always be remembered by our family.

Mahalo.

Hello. I've never done anything like this before, but I feel absolutely compelled. I discovered Iz's music at the end of a movie soundtrack. The credits were too fast for me to catch the name so I just searched the web under "Over the Rainbow" and found enough info to order "Facing Future" through Amazon. I listened to the CD over and over on a long car drive Saturday and just could not stop crying tears of happiness and longing even though I don't understand one word of Hawaiian. Ode to Joy is the only thing that comes to mind - being so blown away that the music transports you. I LOVE all kinds of music but this kind of reaction is very rare indeed and must be treasured. I wish very much that I'd been aware of his music while he was still alive. I would have been on a plane to Hawaii at a moment's notice to catch him in concert. What joyful memories for all who who did! Thank you Iz. There ARE angels and you clearly were a treasure to behold.

I just returned from 3 weeks on the Garden Isle with my husband and 4 yr old son. I was very happy to finally complete my collection of Iz's CDs and to get the video. I brought it back to our rental house and waited for a quiet moment alone to watch it....I actually could not watch it for several days because I knew it would make me sad to finally see and experience IZ's amazing talent. I was not disappointed....I never met this man or even saw him until this time and yet I wept. No music has such a profound effect on me......the ability to make me so nostalgic for the Islands, happy and joyful and melancholy all at the same time. I want to thank Bruddah IZ for his legacy of love, compassion, tolerance and incredible humanity. His message is a very important one for all of us to live by. He loved his Island home and all it's people, and all his many fans....how lucky for all of us. I read the messages here weekly and I am astounded by all the peoples of the world who are touched by his music. Mahalo for maintaining this site. My most heartfelt thoughts go out to IZ,s wife and daughter and all his family, friends and fans. We will never forget you dear Isreal....NEVER.

Israel's music was brought to my attention through a commercial just after my daughter was born . . . only a few seconds of him humming Over the Rainbow, and I was so touched by his voice. I found him through a TV Guide article, sadly it was a note of his passing. My daughter and I listen to his music often. His music brings me such joy and serenity, yet at the same time I often find myself tearful that he has passed and his voice has been silenced by his journey home to Heaven. Surely, Heaven has been made even more delightful with his presence. I wish all his family and friends peace, love, health and happiness. You are in my thoughts when I listen to the music, and I have no doubt he watches over you all with great love. Aloha

I fell in love with native Hawaii music when a friend turned me on to the Brother's Caziemero in 1978. I just discovered Israel's music this year when my family went to Hawaii without me but brought me back "Lost in Iz World". What music! While 'Over the Rainbow' is a all time masterpiece I will cherish hearing forever, I also enjoyed Iz's version of " 'Ulili E " which is also recorded by the Brothers Cazimero on their 'Follow Me' album. Growing up in the dry desert lands of southern Arizona makes me very appreciative of the talents of Iz and other native Hawaii artists. May the family and close friends of Iz smile and have peaceful and prosperous lives. I can't wait to get to heaven to hear Iz in person.

Like many people, my husband, Father Gregory (a Russian Orthodox priest in San Francisco) and I discoved Israel's sweet voice posthumously. We have caught up with his gift to the world, but are saddened by the loss of such a wonderful human being and talent. As Orthodox Christians, we will continue to honor Israel's memory with heartfelt prayers. God's love surely touched him and will continue to do so forevermore. I finally discovered the singer of the most beautiful rendition of "Over the Rainbow" late last night while reading a magazine! I'd always wondered who's voice and ukulele could touch my heart the way this singer did! I'm glad to finally know the name of this talented and gifted artist, but I am sorry to hear that he had passed away in 1997 (to my surprise). My condolences to Mr. Kamawiwo'ole's family. May he rest in peace.

I have only recently become familiar with the music of Israel Kamakawiwo'ole. I guess I should begin to tell you that the song "over the rainbow" has a very special meaning for me. and when I heard Isreal's version of the song...I just fell in love with it, and was compelled to find and purchase the album on which it is recorded. In searching for information on the artist and the album I discovered that he had died. I almost feel that I've lost someone. I think my mother has guided me to this wonderful album... Now a brief explaination of why I love this song so much.. Soon after my mothers death (about a week or so) I had a dream in which she was cradeling me in her arms (as you would an infant) even though I was an adult, and she was singing Over the Rainbow to me, I could feel her and smell her...the dream was so real that I Know my mother was there that night. So, now everytime I hear that song it brings tears to my eyes (a good thing) and I feel close to her...To hear Isreal's version is just the most wonderful that I have ever heard...it is so haunting and beautiful...the way it was ment to be performed and heard...I am so sorry for your loss...I wish I had been aware of his music and passion for his land befor his death. And now I will continue to discover his music and his haunting lyrics

Your music has touched our lives in a way, which no one has ever done through song.

Oh, how I miss this man, his beautiful voice, his ideals, his personality, and above all, that he is no longer with us. I know that it is selfish, of me, but, I can only imagine, how his wife, and daughter miss him still. It is like an open wound that does not heal, with the passage of time.

Is Gaylord, still around? The one who played keyboard, for Izreal?

Please keep this page open, and let us all remember him.

Just love the song Over the Rainbow and I looked up to see who the artist was and found out that he had died in 1997. I think this was a great lose not only to his wife and daughter but also to Hawaii and the World. I listen to his mucis when ever I'm in my truck, if his wife and daughter have a web site I would love to e-mail with them.

I first heard Iz singing "Over the Rainbow" on a PBS promotional spot (I used to work for PBS and would see these promos over and over again !) I always thought it was such a beautiful, poignant version of the song. Then, of course, came the recent episode of ER where this same song is playing as Dr. Greene, in a scene more beautiful and hopeful than sad, slips into death from a brain tumor. I had no idea that the man who did this lovely music was, himself, already deceased. Even though he's no longer with us here on Earth, I hope he somehow knows how much his music has touched many, many people !

I hated Judy Garland's Over the Rainbow until I heard Isreal,s. His voice and music is like warm honey even if the words aren't right. I have played it so much until I have the whole family singing it. He could have hummed the phone book and it would have been fine. So young and so much warmth comes through. I never knew the man, but I hear the kindest spirit when I listen. Thank you

Just wanted to say how much we enjoy his music, we played it for our unborn daughter and now that she is 3 months old, I know we will enjoy it for years to come as a family.

Grace and Peace
