I am new to IZ’s music, but I have never heard a more beautiful voice in my life. My twin sister introduced me to his music. When I heard him sing “somewhere over the rainbow”, my heart melted and it brought tears to my eyes. It still does every time I play it. My father passed away not too long ago and this song reminds me of him, but also with the sadness it brings an unreal peacefull feeling. It makes me think my father is okay. I thank him for that and his voice was that of a true Angel from Heaven. Where he is now. Thank you IZ. May God Bless Your Family. Cat

I first heard of “Iz” from my cousin Shelly (who is half Hawaiian), this past summer. For Christmas this year, much to my delight, my family purchased “Facing Future” for me. I find his music and voice to be very beautifully haunting, my favourite piece being “White Sandy Beach of Hawai’i” – I could listen to that piece over and over again and never tire of it. His family must be very proud to have had him in their lives and to me his voice will always be there.

You are my hero! I made a pillow case in your honor and now sleep and cry on it every night. I miss you so much. Just remember the good times. I’ll see you somewhere over the rainbow. The only thing that matters is that I was loved by you.

I love his music and was sad to hear of his death in ’97. I am a new fan and was hoping for a new cd to come out, but, sadly, one will never again come out. We can only sit and listen to his beautiful music full of sadness. We are able to cry to Hawaii ’78, smile to Somewhere Over the Rainbow/What a Wonderful World, and laugh to Hawaiian Suppa Man. The only way to really express his greatness is to spread his music, tell people about it, so that his music is heard over the radio. A large grin came to my face when i heard IZ’s song come over the TV at the end of the fairly recent movie Finding Forrester. It was the first time that I had ever watched the credits six times. God bless you Israel Kamakawiwo’ole. May you rest in peace. We will forever cherish and protect your music

Today while in the music store, came across ‘IZ’ knowing nothing about his music just had a feeling I would love his voice and songs. I was listening to him as I got online to find out more about him, only to sadly find out he has passed. What a wonderful, gifted soul, who was able to touch so many.

When I heard Izzy’s version of ‘Somewhere over the Rainbow’ in the movie ‘Meet Joe Black’ I was intrigued by the simplicity and beauty of the arrangement and it made me think of Taj Mahal, but my TV was too small and fuzzy to read the credits and I never learned the artist’s name. Time passes…..I just saw the movie ‘Finding Forrester” this evening, and upon hearing the same song again, I just HAD! to know who the artist was. Thanks to the Internet, I arrived at this site, only to find that the Israel had passed away over 5 years ago. While I am saddened by the loss of such a beautiful songster as Israel, my heart is lifted by the purity of this man’s vocal expression. I hope to hear and to learn much more about Israel Kamakawiwo’ole in the future. With his blessing I shall be playing more of his music.

Thanks,

Don Yuzwenko

PS please tell me how to properly pronounce Israel Kamakawiwo’ole’s name

At this late date, I have, only now, discovered Israel “IZ” Kamakawiwo’ole and his music. It seems to me he loved every minute he was able to sing. His voice is breathtakingly magnificent! I am saddened he had to leave this world at such a young age. It was a heart rendering loss of talent. However, he will live on in his music…even more in the hearts of his family, friends and fans. They have their memories with them all the time.

Thank you for this guestbook and the chance to express my thoughts and feelings.

I’m Australian, but I like to think that I’m one of those that Iz describes as “Hawaiians at heart”, and so is that very special person who introduced me to his music, during my second visit to Hawaii in 2000. I went home with “Facing Future” and it very quickly became one of my favourite CDs. I now have three others, including the wonderful “Alone in Iz World”, which is playing as I write this. I love how I can listen to Iz, and his beautiful voice will surround and soothe me, and it’s like I’m back in magical, healing Hawaii again. He is the soul and spirit of the islands. Wherever you are, Brudda Iz, thank you so very much for the wonderful gift you gave us – through your music you’ll live forever. Mahalo and aloha.

PS – Thanks for the duck joke!

Although its been 5 years since his passing I just like to say that I still hold a great lost in my heart for him. I listen to his songs often, and it makes me smile with pride when my children pick his CD to listen to over other ones. For that I know the messages which he left in his songs have been heard. I Thank you for giving our children hope and pride in who they are. Mahalo nui…Kahea

I learned of this wonderful singer in ’95 and was amaze by his incredible voice and the way he could bring peace and contentment to the soul. I was diagnosed with cervical cancer in ’95 and had multiple complications that required several major operations followed by long periods of hospitalization with much pain and suffering. Izzy and his beautiful music got me through these endless days and nights. I went to this hospital an average of once every three months for seven years and I’ve never gotten tired of listening to Izzy’s music. My mother loves Hawaii and Izzy is one of her favorite artists. He is greatly missed but will live on in our hearts through his music. I love the way you have chosen to honor Izzy with your bannerless web site. That’s awesome! Sincerely, Lynn Peterson

In my life I recently experienced an emotional upheaval. On my travels from Alaska, my home for nearly 7 years, to California, I was alone, with my anguish and pain. I had the Lord, and Iz to comfort me in my travels. I listened to his music, listened to his words and they were uplifting to my soul and spirit. My life is better but a slow recovery. Much Aloha to Iz, his family and God for bringing such a gentle man into this world.

Mahalo, Kimo

I echo the sentiments expressed by T. Gary on the fan link (almost verbatim…without the flash intro). The one change I would like to express is that I’m not in middle America…I’m in the thick of things in New York City. Here, the exciting myriad of sights and sounds too often gets lost as they blur together. The ‘Over the Rainbow/Wonderful World’ medley in Finding Forrester stood out and re-clarified music for me.

I’ve just this moment learned of his death through this website. IZ: Thank you, wherever you are.

I would like to carry the entire line on my website as a tribute to him and also to turn other patients onto his wonderful way of touching lives. I am a breast cancer patient and this is my gift back to Iz for the healing his music brings me. If someone could please let me know where I can buy his CD’s from a distributor of his music I would appreciate it.

This man has been an influence for the hawaiian people and non hawaiian alike. A man not only known for the size of his body, but more so the enormity of his heart. I realize how lucky I was to have been in the presence of such a great man. His legacy will live on, through us, through his music, and in out hearts. I love this gentle giant with all my heart, and my children and their children will also. His strenght and fearless courage for the inevatable will never leave memory. thankyou iz,I love you

Since seeing “Meet Joe Black” and hearing the melody, I’ve pondered who I was listening to. I’d hear it on a commercial and it would stop me where I was to listen to it. As with many busy people, I didn’t get the chance to find out who this voice belonged to until I was knocked down a peg or two by illness and had idle time on my hands. I’m sorry this man died before I had the chance to know him. His voice is as sweet and simple as any I’ve ever heard in my life. I, for one, will never forget the music.

My wife I had heard about IZ atop Haleakela Crater (House of the Sun) in Maui from a park ranger in the souvenir shop just below the summit. We knew of his “Somewhere Over the Rainbow/What a Wonderful Word” but little of him. An emotional story from the park ranger convinced us to buy “Facing Future” and we played it all the way down Haleakela. His music brought what we were seeing into remarkable poignancy. When we got to Lahina, we bought four more of his CD’s. We were and still are completely overtaken with emotions we hardly know how to explain whenever we listen to his music. We wish his family well and look forward to learning more about IZ!

This man and his music brought the Aloha in my heart back to life. His music has also driven me to learn about my own hawiian heritage. Hawaii is soverign in the hearts of all with hawiian blood in their veins, and as Iz would say, in all those hawiian at heart. Wherever we are Hawaii is. That is more important than pieces of paper, flags, and politics. Let us live that each day. Then we honor Iz, Hawaii, and ourselves. Aloha, Iz, and Aloha Nui Loa to all Hawiians and Hawiians at heart.Mahalo Nui Loa.

Dearest IZ’s family, I am so sorry for your loss. I have listened to every one of his CD’s over and over and I have memorized all his songs. I feel really bad that he is gone adn that he can not make anymore CD’s to sing me to sleep. When he did a remake of “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” I cried. At my Gramma’s funeral, we played this song. She died the day after tha September 11th attacks. She loved this song and she sang me to sleep with it many times. She is very grateful for him to have made this song and I am too. I am so sorry for this loss, and I hope you are not troubled to much as to write me back. I am sorry! Aloha, Keakakona

As I write this I’m listening to Izzy’s rendition of “Over The Rainbow”…if ever there was a song to lift a person’s spirits, this is THE song. I had never heard(or noticed) this song before until I heard it on the Art Bell radio show. I think Barbara Simpson played it one Saturday night. Anyways, I’ve been going through a heartache this last 2 weeks and Izzy has helped ease my pain. THANK YOU IZZY! Most sincerely, Robyn from Nebraska

I am an only child. My father’s death has left me a lonely child, albeit a 36 year old child. Having written his obituary & eulogy, singing his ashes to the sea and consoling others on their loss, I finally realized mine during an episode of E.R.

As bitterly painful as the emotions are, they are part of life’s necessities. Thank you, Iz, for reconnecting me to the ironic pain and happiness that life’s memories bring to us. I offer a prayer that your music will continue to transend your brief time on Earth and reconnect others to the right perspective.

Like many others, I am a new fan. After hearing his voice on the radio, I went to the web and found this site. I read the notes family and fans have written. Iz’s music is food for the soul…..we are all grateful to have had the privilege of listening to it. May he rest in peace. He lives on through his music.

Bruddah IZ’s music is inspirational. His voice is magical, without ever seeing him his voice has captured the image of his soul. Beacause of him I have gained the will to pick my guitar and play and sing again. Hoping that one day i might inpire others like he has for me.

We just returned from maui after vacationing for 6 days. I knew this would be a short visit, so I acually started getting in the aloha spirit days before leaving the main land. I happened upon a website where I was introduced to Israel’s music. It did’nt take me long to realise I stumbled into something special. His soulish music made our trip extra memorable. I honor his memory. Thanks, Randy Chafe’ from Washington State

I have just discoverd is wonderful music and wanted to look IZ up on the net just to find out he no longer is among us. His son “Someday Over the Rainbow” has inspired me and even gives me the goose bumps every time I hear it. It takes a real master to take a common known song and make it a master piece which inspires the generations to come.

Long live the music! long live the memories!

I don’t know why I’m writing, but I wanted to say to the family of Israel that I am moved. I first encountered IZ with his beautiful rendition of Somewhere Over the Rainbow. I was captivated by the voice of an angel. When I looked him up and saw pictures, I was amazed. He does not look as he sounds, which made him even more impressive. I have gone on to collect most of his works, and am discovering more about his music every day.

Just as impressive has been the reaction of friends to whom I’ve played his music. From rap to heavy metal fans, everyone loves him.

IZ, you are missed, but not forgotten.

Over the years I had heard music from IZ but I did not know who he was until this past summer. My Daughter and I went to Maui and it was there that I heard his music again and found out his name. I bought several of his CD’s and I listen to them on a daily basis. He has such a beautiful voice and his music is so up-lifting that I can never listen without smiling. His music gives me such peach and joy, I appreciate him so much, he will always be a part of my life from now on.

Never in my memory can I say i’ve heard such a voice. My son who is 9 months old loves to listen. I’ll put on in this life for him and he’ll quiet down and just listen. My father brought home a cd from Hawaii in 1995 and told me of a concert he went to and the increadible man he met. I wish I could tell him how much his music affected my family and thank him face to face. Rest well IZ and thank you.

My husband and I were in Maui on our 20th wedding anniversery when we came across IZ’s cd we brought it after listening to it after one song. What a wonderful voice you have IZ! God sure blessed you! We were both very upset to find that IZ had passed after reading the insert in the CD cover. We brought 2 more of his CD’s before leaving Maui and we enjoyed them so much on the long plane ride home. His music was so relaxing and made the flight home so wonderful to here an angel in our ears. God Bless to you and your family for your loss as it is our loss too.

When I first got to the Hawai’ian Islands in 1994, I became a great admirer of the Makaha Sons and IZ. I returned to the Islands every year until 1997, then – the next time I returned in 2002, I learned that IZ is no longer among us. He was a wonderful singer, and although I never saw him in concert, I’m definitely sure, that he was an admirable, adorable person. As a professional musician, I long ago recognized the honesty and unpretentious innocence [in traditional Hawaiian music] that speaks to the soul. I have sat at the feet of Roland and Robert Cazimero at sunset on Maui and cried as I listened to words I did not understand. I was introduced to “Sons” by a surfer buddy, but only last year learned that Iz had died. I have purchased his solo CD’s and listen to them several times a week. What a gift we have lost…..and may we continue the spirit of aloha that he gave us.

I first heard Bruddah IZ’s voice after the movie, “Finding Forrester”. I had never heard anything quite so beautiful before. I was amazed that someone could sound so fluid and sweet with just a eukule. I only found out he passed away in 1997, once entering this site trying to look up some more things about Izzy.

He was a great talent.

Though I am not a believer in any God, I do insist that we all have a spirit. Izzy was born simply to sing.

My husband and I fell in love with Somewhere Over the Rainbow after hearing it at the end of Finding Forrester and asked my cousin sing it during our wedding ceremony. It was beautiful. We then spent our honeymoon in Hawaii, only to find out how great IZ really truly was and forever will be in our hearts.

Thank you IZ…

My wife and I discovered Iz just this past week on our honeymoon in Oahu. I heard “Over the Rainbow” playing on the speakers of a hotel. It caught my ear right away. While in a shop, I took the time to listen to the latest CD “In Iz World”. The cut they played was “Over the Rainbow”. I was hooked. Had to have it. We love the CD. My son loves it.

I just did a Google search on IZ and found that he passed away in 1997. I am very sad with that news. I look forward to discovering his other music through the other CD’s available.

We recently returned from a 2 week vacation to the Islands. We were on Kauai and the Big Island. When searching for the Music that captures the beauty of the Islands and her people we were drawn to IZ’s music. This was our first trip together, I had been 5 previous times but not with my wife. I had been to Pearl Harbor in the Navy and never had a chance to really visit. Always had duty when we pulled in and only for a day. Perhaps I was not meant to see her until my wife was with me, who knows. I just want to say to IZ’s family, Mahalo, for allowing his music to still be played and teach us Holly’s some Hawaiin Spirit!!

My wife and I just returned from a trip to Maui. Our first time to the islands. While there I listened to a radio station called The Breeze, 99.5. They played some music by Iz. We were there in part to attend a wedding. The Hawaiian minister (Pia) played the guitar after the ceremony. He played Iz’s Somewhere Over a Rainbow/Wonderful World piece. Suddenly, it all came together, the music I had been hearing on The Breeze, my memory of hearing this sad/sweet song at the end of “Finding Forrester,” the ocean and the beauty around me, and what Iz was teaching me about these wonderful people, the Hawaiians. On Facing Future, Iz talks about seeing hope for the Hawaiians. He was very wise. A people with this much strength and love in their hearts will prevail. Look what is happening already. Iz touched me and my wife deeply. I am forever changed. Others will change too. Don’t give up hope. Thank you for this site.

Sincerely, Christopher Milne

to all. this is my story and it is true. i went to Hawaii for the first time for my birthday in April of 2002. on the last day of my vacation, my friend Peter, who lives in Manoa Vally played a song for me. it was Brother IZ’s “Somewhere over the Rainbow”. i had recognized the song but never knew where it came from. Peter told me the story of Iz and his life. after getting back to the mainland, that song echoed in my mind. i downloaded it off the web and burned a cd of it. i played it in my car so much i thought my car was gonna freak. I told myself that if i ever made it back to Hawaii, i would go to where Iz was laid to rest and pay my respects for such a beautiful song.

I made it back to Hawaii this past September. For a vacation a bit longer than the last one. ( Now let me add something, i work for the airlines so i fly stand-by. meaning if there is an available seat, i can go, if not i have to go back to the hotel and wait another day.) For 5 days i went all over Oahu, but never made it to pay my respects to Brother IZ. when my vacation was over i headed to the airport and tried to get back to the mainland. Day 1, no luck, Day 2, no luck… so trying to figure out why Hawaii wouldnt let me out, i rented a car and drove the Leeward side of Oahu. Hawaii herself or what ever forces may be, knew i had unfinished business. i went to the bay where Brother IZ was scattered and threw my Lai into the water and thanked IZ for his songs and his love. I had gotten to do what i came for. Finally.

Later that night sitting at the airport, already turned away from the first Houston flight and turned away from the first and only Newark flight my chances on getting out that night were down to the only LA flight and the second and last Houston flight, which were both overbooked. i honestly was about to give up and call my friends Suzy and Peter in Manoa Valley to come get me.

Then it happened… if you know Honolulu International Airport at all, Gate 15 sits across from a little kiosk that sells music, tapes and cd’s… they started to play Brother IZ. Gate 15 was for the second Houston flight, but for some reason i called gate 25 which was the only LA flight and was told they had one open seat and i was next on the list. i grabbed my luggage and ran. ran and ran some more. i got that last seat to LA. i came to Hawaii to do something, i got to do it, and Brother IZ helped me get home.

I believe Brother IZ got me on that flight. I believe he watches over Hawaii and her people, and i believe he still makes music.

Thank you IZ 🙂

I don’t know where to start. I live in Australia and the final episodes of ER were recently screened here. After I watched it I could not get “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” out of my head. I talked about it with everyone who cared to listen. It is so haunting. It also crosses age boundaries. I am 38 years old, my niece is 11 and my brother-in-law is 50. We all love this song. I asked at the local record store but they couldn’t help me so I got on the internet and looked up the ER site– that is how I have ended up here. I was very sorry to hear that IZ had died. (It is also scary to think that it was at the same age that I am now.) My deepest sympathy to his family. Funnily enough I have been meaning to purchase the “Finding Forrester” soundtrack for some time. I never realised that the artist was the one and the same, IZ. Thank you for your very informative site.

After discovering Israel’s music this past summer, only today did I have the time to find out more about this man with the beautiful and peaceful voice. Now I am stunned. I can’t believe that he has already passed on to the next life. I sit here in tears wondering why this man with such a gift would die so young. Yet I am sure that he lives on through his family and his music.

I just read over the last few months of postings here and I am so amazed at how many people seem to have the same experiences. How is it that hearing ONE song can get his spirit, his aloha, into our hearts so deeply? His music is almost the only kind I listen to, ever since I came upon it a year ago in the Forrester movie. (At the end of the movie I was transfixed, I had to wait until the very last credits rolled to get his name, and I had to hear every note. I have NEVER been effected this way by any person or music). I also cried when I tracked him down and found out he had died; in fact I still cry sometimes, like I lost my own brother. I can’t explain it, I have every one of his CD’s, and the Makaha Sons’,and wear Iz T-shirts, and found some Iz posters. I guess he is helping me be a better person, to lighten up, to be forgiving and to try to find my faith. Anyhow, it is nice to see that so many other people have been as deeply touched. Best thoughts and aloha to the Kamakawiwo’ole family from me and my family here in Oregon.

A young man that was born and partially raised in Hawaii committed suicide a few weeks ago. His mother request some of IZ’s music be played at the funeral. It was the most incredible and absolutely the most beautiful voice and music that I have ever heard. I went out and bought ever CD of his I could find. I have never been to the Islands. But I feel that I have.I now would like to visit and am definitely going to study the culture. Amazing the death of loved ones can open doors that would not other wise be opened. Something as simple as music and an incredible voice can change the meaning of a senseless tradegy. That you IZ and watch over Eryck for us.

I have worked and done charity visits to many folks of size up to 1000 pounds and I see a recurrent theme that many have great spirits. I recently met a nurse who worked with Israel at the time of his passing and she encouraged me to visit his music. I am now a big fan. Having been competed in martial arts and specialized in the care of those of size as a physical therapist, Israel’s spirit is reflective of the many soles I have worked with to restore walking and independence. He’s spirit does achieve a very special expression that few have. His music is full of life.

I continue to present my programs to help healthcare porfessionals nationally to improve care for those of size and before each program I now listen to Israel’s music for inspiration. Micahel Dionne Choice Physical Therapy, Inc. 5233 Indian Cirlce Gainesville, GA 30506 www.bariatricRehab.com

I only recently discovered IZ. After hearing “Somewhere over the Rainbow” on ER, I purchased Facing Future. I have not stopped listening to it since. The people of Hawaii were truely blessed to have this man. I am sorry that I only now have learned of him. I know that everyone and anyone that hears the music of IZ will be listening to a gift. I know the people of Hawaii miss this man. My best wishes to the Family of IZ, and to the people of Hawaii, Thanks. I have been touched.

Dear IZ: I was walking in Pier One one afternoon this week and heard your song “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” it haunted me and at the same time gave me a sense of peace and love to hear such a beautiful voice with such an expression of love. I hurried home and searched the Web for more information than the girl at the store could give me. To my dismay, I learned that on the same day that I found your beautiful music I had already lost you. I am now reading everything I can and I have ordered CD’s. Thank you IZ, I know you can hear us singing your praises. And as for the Hockey Cluck, He or She must listen with their brain only and obviously there is no love or emotion there.

I did not have the good fortune to meet this man in his lifetime, but his music has certainly spoken volumes to me.

We were blessed to be able to visit Kauai in the year 2000 and fell in love with Iz’s homeland. We know now what he was singing about!

Such a lovely man with such a lovely message.

I lost my Daddy this year. He too was a big man with an even bigger heart. In many ways “IZ” reminds me of Daddy. I’m sure he also lived by the same words my Daddy did: “Work like you don’t need the money. Love like you’ve never been hurt. Dance like nobody’s watching. Sing like nobody’s listening. Live like it’s Heaven on Earth.” I know there is a heaven and I hope that Daddy has introduced himself to “IZ”.

I had never even heard of “Bruddah IZ” before six days ago. Some friends of mine played “Somewhere over the Rainbow” for me and I almost literally cried from the beauty contained in this man’s voice. Never had this som touched me before until I heard it sung by a man with so much love and compassion in his voice. I searched the web and found this site. I was really sad to read how IZ died. I would have very much like to have seen him in person, or even to have met him. If nothing else, just to tell him how his music really touched me. Maybe it would have mattered, maybe it wouldn’t have. Anyway, I will be buying as much of his music as I can get my hands on, I know that much. Much love to his family and friends.

I first heard Israel When my girlfriend returned from the beautifal Island of Maui last Feb. I listened to his “Facing Future” cd and was in awe. His voice brought peace to my soul. his traditional Hawaiian Music made me treasure the natural things in life, Like Hawaii was to him. I wish, as I am sure all of you do, that a man like him, should be portrayed and looked up to all over the world. Hawaii Is a culture within itself, and an attraction for many. If I could meet Israel one time, I would shake his large hand, and tell him, “Thank you for showing me tradition at its finest. And thank you for all the memories you will give me.” Mahalo, Ian Albert

Hi, I am so touched by Bruddah IZ’s rendition of “Over the Rainbow”. I am creating a video to promote the Elks Children’s Eye Clinic which serves children up to age 18 who need eye care. I would like permission to use IZ’s rendition of “Over the Rainbow” in the video.

The mission of the clinic is to give the gift of sight to children who may not otherwise be able to afford the treatments that are required. Who do I contact for permission? This is strickly a non-commercial, non-profit use of his material. thanks, Joannah Vaughan vaughajo@ohsu.edu

I visited the island of Kawaii recently. It was my first trip to the islands of Hawaii. Having grown up in the tropics myself, I was entranced by the lush green vegetation, the blue waters, and the beautiful people.

There was something else that held my interest — haunting songs sung to the ukelele — that I heard frequently. And one voice impressed itself on my memory. I found myself humming these beautiful songs quite often. I did not have a clue about the singer.

While waiting at the airport to depart from Kawaii, I heard the beautiful song “Over the Rainbow” being played in one of the gift shops. I ran over to ask the lady at the counter whose music this was. She said Israel. I bought the CD instantly.

Having returned home, I played the songs and started reading about Israel from the CD cover. I was extremely saddened to discover that the singer of these haunting songs had passed away a few years ago. I felt this sudden sense of loss.

It is amazing how powerful an effect his music has! Long live his memory! I have discovered IZ world which is a treasure.

Best regards to his family. Please write if you get a chance.

I went into Borders records and I was bored so I decided to listen to all the world music that was available to listen to with headphones. I clicked on World of IZ and the sound of an angel came back to me. I immediately went home to learn more about this extraordinary man.. I had not realized he was no longer living and I am so saddened. What a loss to Hawaii and the world… and to all that knew the man and not just the singer. From what I have read here, I know the man was as special as the music. I imagine he will be an even bigger legend now than when he was alive which never makes sense, but it was probably the fact that he was deceased that made him on the Borders Records CD’s picked for the public to hear. Ironically, I found out about him probably because he passed on. I feel so sad.. I don’t even have the right to feel as sad as I do because I don’t even know the man, but there is this terrible sense of loss. I am so grateful for this message board where I can learn more about who he was. My regards to his loved ones. Lisa

I think you must have been one of the most loving kindest men to live Iz, save perhaps for Jesus. I base this only by your music, which is to say the least beautiful. I have loved almost all of your songs, especially the pretty traditional Hawai’ian ones. Somewhere over the Rainbow/It’s a Wonderful World still moves me to tears. I think I can safely reasonably talk in the second person despite the fact that you do not live in this world physically. You have moved on to much bigger and better places my friend, but you are still here in spirit:) Thanks for all the wonderful music, a nice little trip to Hawai’i, a break from the monotony of Indiana! You are in a good place now though, for which I am glad. Much love and happiness everyone

As a hapa kanaka growing up in Canada, not much emphasis was given to our Hawaiian side. And still, we heard Hawaiian music at home and as an adult, lots of Hawaiian music made its way into my home.

None has touched this poorly realized Hawaiian heart as much as Iz. If my Papa were still alive, he would cry as my son and I do when we listen to Iz’s magical voice.

I hope my end is way, way off but I’ve left firm instructions that Iz is to be played at my funeral. Thank you to you, his family, for your part in creating and sustaining this wonderful, wonderful man and his talent.

I just came back from Hawaii, but one day when I was there I was looking through CD’s. I stumbeled upon an Iz CD so I listened to it and the music was almost magical. I bought the CD and I later did some research on it. I learned that the singer of the music was not alive anymore so I became very sad. His music will always touch me and make room in my heart, and even though he is not living, his music will always be alive.

Loved his singing and his “spirit.” We will miss him very much. He was not only a “bruddah” to his hawaiian “family” he was also a brother to all who are free thinkers and all those who could “feel” his musical messages.

As a former native of Hawaii and living on the mainland for 30 years, I have always missed the islands. I listened for the first time IZ’s “Hawaii 78 Introduction” and “Hawaii ’78” and felt very connected to this brillant entertainer. He is one of Hawaii’s great sons and I am so happy to have been introduced to this wonderful musician.

Iz is gone , but his legacy lives on like the icons of the arts. I’m an artist and currently searching, absorbing, understanding and feeling his art, life and specially his philosophy on Hawaiian Sovereignty. If I feel I’m ready, I’ll go ahead paint him (not a portrait) with symbols of his inner thoughts. Just like I painted: Lennon, A.C. Jobim, Che Guevarra, etc… I would like to thank this web for being simple that touches all my senses and specially to Mr. Edward Sugimoto.

IZ’S MUSIC IS GREAT. THE MUSIC FROM IZ AND OTHERS FROM THE ISLANDS TAKES ON A MUCH BIGGER MEANING. IT IS ONE OF THE FEW MIND ALTERING GOOD-FOR-YOU THINGS THAT CAN TRANSPORT YOU FROM THE DAILY B.S. We first discovered Iz in Kauai in 1998 and couldn’t wait to find out where we could see him perform in person. We were both very saddened to hear he had past the year before. His music still lives from year to year throughout the Islands. We spend 2 weeks every year in Kauai and it is as though his spirit lives forever. We love his music and purchased every tape and cd put out. His spirit will always live in our hearts as we will always continue playing his music on a daily basis. Thank you Brother Iz for what you have given us. May you rest in peace.

I first heard “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” when I saw the movie Finding Forrester and I could not rest until I found who was singing it. Shortly before that I had spent two incredible weeks exploring Oahu. It is surely one of the most beautiful places on earth, and the inspiration for the “hauntingly beautiful” music of Iz. A friend who lives in Hawaii gave me Facing Future for Christmas and sometimes I just let it play and play because I can’t get enough of its beauty. To those of his family he left behind, my condolances and may you always keep his memory alive. I hope and pray his daughter has inherited his talent – I’ll be watching for her.

My family and I recently returned to Virginia after 3 weeks in Hawaii, our first trip there. As we were traveling on the Big Island from Kohala to the volcano, we listened to the radio and heard Iz’s song “White Sandy Beach of Hawaii” and my 12-year-old daughter loved it and had to have the cd. We bought two of his cd’s and are enchanted with the music. Coincidentally, on our last day in Hawaii we went snorkeling to see dolphins and were snorkeling in the water near where Iz’s ashes were scattered, so we were told by our captain and crew on the boat.

I have no memories to post. I only found out about Iz and his music two weeks ago, through a magazine article that said his songs were “hauntingly beautiful”, and I had to learn more or someone who has such talent. Much to my dismay, I found this beautiful voice had been silenced five years ago! I ordered some cds and await them. In the meantime, I am reading all I can to find out about the man behind such beauty. Even in death, Iz continues to make peoples lives better…bless you Iz wherever you are!

I recently tried to send this e-mail to IZ’s former e-mail address. The e-mail was returned so I decided to post the message here…

I have been going through a difficult time in my life since the World Trade Center attack. I recently moved to Denver Colorado and started working in a coffee shop. One of the songs that they play in the shop is your Over the Rainbow rendition. The song touched me deeply and made me feel happy for the first time in a long time. I can only imagine you now looking down on all of us and smiling. What a wonderful world it must be for you looking down and knowing that you continue to make so many people happy.

We all go through troubling times in our lives, but the simplicity of your work makes me feel relaxed, happy and alive!

I grew up in Indiana and basketball was extremely popular. A minister at my church said that he imagined Heaven was like an endless basketball court full of all the greats. I bet Heaven is a beautiful sunset for you on a nice beach with many friends around, and music, yes, nice music. Someday I will thank you personally on your beach, but as for now I wish you an Aloha from the mainland.

Peace…

Kyle

I lived in Kailua, Oahu from 1955 to 1957. My husband was in the Marine Corps.at Kaneohe Bay. We lived at 324 S. Kalaheo Ave. I taught at the Punahou with Jiggy Blaisdell Clark and my daughter,Elizabeth, was born at Tripler Army Hospital. I learned about 17 hulas which I still remember and can do. In March of this year I was in St.Augustine,FL and heard the most beautiful Hawaiian music coming out of a record store in the mall. I followed the sound and the clerk introduced me to Iz. I memorized the Hawaiian motto when I was at Punahou and the first and last cuts on Facing Future make me cry. The life of the land is preserved in its righteousness. Aloha nui o ka koi. Barbara

Like alot of other people I wondered who was singing so I asked a worker from The Hawaiian Music Store. He talked about all of the talents of the “spiritual giant” IZ. I unfortunately like many other posts on here only came to know him after his death as a result of the movie “Finding Forrester” with the song “Somewhere Over the Rainbow”. That version/variation of the song is the only one I’ve ever heard that is in the same league Louis Armstrong’s version of “What a Wonderful World”. I bought the soundtrack to the movie because of that song and because I love Miles Davis’ music alot as well.

I found alot of mp3’s of Iz online yesterday that are great as well so I’m going to pick up a couple of his CD’s later today. I’d encourage anyone who loves “Over The Rainbow” to check out some of his other music as well.

Anyway, as another post I read stated, hearing this man’s sweet soul speaking through his voice in that song makes it obvious that somehow, somewhere, he is indeed still alive and smiling at this very moment as you’re reading this. Thank you Iz.

My husband & I just discovered Iz’s beautiful music the night before last while watching “Meet Joe Black”. We found his web site today & raced to store to buy his Facing Future CD. It truly touched our hearts & souls! After listening to it from beginning to end, I got back on the web site to read more about this incredible person & realized that today was the fifth anniversary of his passing. (Pretty amazing coincidence! ) His beautiful soul had touched me so deeply that I found my self crying my eyes out at my computer over his loss. He will live on forever in all of our hearts. Thank you for your beautiful music Iz & I hope to meet you on the other side some day! Mahalo Joanne

I just discovered who sang that soul moving Music from the Grand finaly of E.R., Last Night 06/24/02. I played This song (Over the rainbow) for 4 hours this Morning, as I drove to Work. When I first heared this song by IZ, it made me Cry as It was my Mom’s Most faverite song in the World. and When I heard this Angelic Voice Singing this, I broke Down! Remembering My Mother.

When I came home from work today I decided to go on the internet to find out More of this Man with the Voice of an Angel, only to find that he’d already passed on to Heaven, on the same day I lost my Mother. and I also found that IZ, and I was born on the Same Day. I feel lucky for me because I now have IZ’s Music in my hart, and can hear him until I meet him in Heaven and can hear him sing with all the ages of Angels. How Happy all you must be to have had the privlage to have known and loved him.

Be strong all his Children and family, because you will all be together again in god’s Time.

With Love!

Rich.

Israel’s haunting, eerie melodic tones have been flaoting around me like a vague nimbus for years without me really zeroing in on what I was hearing. Then this Spring the television show ‘ER’ used IZ’s Somewhere Over The Rainbow/What A Wonderful World to it’s dramatic perfection. I then did a search on the Net and all the sounds snapped into place for me… Meet Joe Black, Finding Forrester, eToys.com, a trip that I made to Fiji for my Honeymoon… it seems to me that his soulful intonations have been a part of my life for so long… I now know what has to be added to my life’s music library, and somehow, am certain that it always was and will be… keep paddling that canoe, we’ll all eventually be pulled to you bruddah IZ.

As a lover hawaiian music, I just found Iz’s music to be enlighting, touching, moving, and enjoyable. I lost my 20 year daughter to a sudden heart aliment 3 years ago and everytime I listen to Iz’s music it brings good memories of him and my daughter.

I am Hawaiian at heart thats why I love Iz and everything he stands for. His wife and family must be awfully proud of Iz as his music still lives on even here in Pennsylvania.

Aloha.

I just wanted to say how important Bruddah IZs music is to myself and my son Brennan (5). We listen to his CDs all the time, and because of that, Brennan seems to have more of an appreciation for Hawaii each day. He said this morning that when he grows up, he would like to teach people Hawaiian Culture so that Bruddah IZ would be happy. He once asked me if he was Hawaiian, because he was born here. It was hard to explain to a three year old. But a friend of ours told him that he was not Hawaiian blood, but Hawaiian heart. I think Bruddah IZ would have liked that.

We recently traveled to the Mainland, driving across Oklahoma and parts of California, and in each rental car, we listened to Bruddahs tape. We truly felt as though we had brought a bit of Hawaii with us, and couldnt wait to return.

Isreal is our Hawaiian Supa’man, and will always be remembered by our family.

Mahalo.

Hello. I’ve never done anything like this before, but I feel absolutely compelled. I discovered Iz’s music at the end of a movie soundtrack. The credits were too fast for me to catch the name so I just searched the web under “Over the Rainbow” and found enough info to order “Facing Future” through Amazon. I listened to the CD over and over on a long car drive Saturday and just could not stop crying tears of happiness and longing even though I don’t understand one word of Hawaiian. Ode to Joy is the only thing that comes to mind – being so blown away that the music transports you. I LOVE all kinds of music but this kind of reaction is very rare indeed and must be treasured. I wish very much that I’d been aware of his music while he was still alive. I would have been on a plane to Hawaii at a moment’s notice to catch him in concert. What joyful memories for all who who did! Thank you Iz. There ARE angels and you clearly were a treasure to behold.

I just returned from 3 weeks on the Garden Isle with my husband and 4 yr old son. I was very happy to finally complete my collection of Iz’s CDs and to get the video. I brought it back to our rental house and waited for a quiet moment alone to watch it….I actually could not watch it for several days because I knew it would make me sad to finally see and experience IZ’s amazing talent. I was not disappointed….I never met this man or even saw him until this time and yet I wept. No music has such a profound effect on me……the ability to make me so nostalgic for the Islands, happy and joyful and melancholy all at the same time. I want to thank Bruddah IZ for his legacy of love, compassion, tolerance and incredible humanity. His message is a very important one for all of us to live by. He loved his Island home and all it’s people, and all his many fans….how lucky for all of us. I read the messages here weekly and I am astounded by all the peoples of the world who are touched by his music. Mahalo for maintaining this site. My most heartfelt thoughts go out to IZ,s wife and daughter and all his family, friends and fans. We will never forget you dear Isreal….NEVER.

Israel’s music was brought to my attention through a commercial just after my daughter was born . . . only a few seconds of him humming Over the Rainbow, and I was so touched by his voice. I found him through a TV Guide article, sadly it was a note of his passing. My daughter and I listen to his music often. His music brings me such joy and serenity, yet at the same time I often find myself tearful that he has passed and his voice has been silenced by his journey home to Heaven. Surely, Heaven has been made even more delightful with his presence. I wish all his family and friends peace, love, health and happiness. You are in my thoughts when I listen to the music, and I have no doubt he watches over you all with great love. Aloha

I fell in love with native Hawaii music when a friend turned me on to the Brother’s Caziemero in 1978. I just discovered Israel’s music this year when my family went to Hawaii without me but brought me back “Lost in Iz World”. What music! While ‘Over the Rainbow’ is a all time masterpiece I will cherish hearing forever, I also enjoyed Iz’s version of ” ‘Ulili E ” which is also recorded by the Brothers Cazimero on their ‘Follow Me’ album. Growing up in the dry desert lands of southern Arizona makes me very appreciative of the talents of Iz and other native Hawaii artists. May the family and close friends of Iz smile and have peaceful and prosperous lives. I can’t wait to get to heaven to hear Iz in person.

Like many people, my husband, Father Gregory (a Russian Orthodox priest in San Francisco) and I discoved Israel’s sweet voice posthumously. We have caught up with his gift to the world, but are saddened by the loss of such a wonderful human being and talent. As Orthodox Christians, we will continue to honor Israel’s memory with heartfelt prayers. God’s love surely touched him and will continue to do so forevermore. I finally discovered the singer of the most beautiful rendition of “Over the Rainbow” late last night while reading a magazine! I’d always wondered who’s voice and ukulele could touch my heart the way this singer did! I’m glad to finally know the name of this talented and gifted artist, but I am sorry to hear that he had passed away in 1997 (to my surprise). My condolences to Mr. Kamawiwo’ole’s family. May he rest in peace.

I have only recently become familiar with the music of Israel Kamakawiwo’ole. I guess I should begin to tell you that the song “over the rainbow” has a very special meaning for me. and when I heard Isreal’s version of the song…I just fell in love with it, and was compelled to find and purchase the album on which it is recorded. In searching for information on the artist and the album I discovered that he had died. I almost feel that I’ve lost someone. I think my mother has guided me to this wonderful album… Now a brief explaination of why I love this song so much.. Soon after my mothers death (about a week or so) I had a dream in which she was cradeling me in her arms (as you would an infant) even though I was an adult, and she was singing Over the Rainbow to me, I could feel her and smell her…the dream was so real that I Know my mother was there that night. So, now everytime I hear that song it brings tears to my eyes (a good thing) and I feel close to her…To hear Isreal’s version is just the most wonderful that I have ever heard…it is so haunting and beautiful…the way it was ment to be performed and heard…I am so sorry for your loss…I wish I had been aware of his music and passion for his land befor his death. And now I will continue to discover his music and his haunting lyrics

Oh, how I miss this man, his beautiful voice, his ideals, his personality, and above all, that he is no longer with us. I know that it is selfish, of me, but, I can only imagine, how his wife, and daughter miss him still. It is like an open wound that does not heal, with the passage of time.

Is Gaylord, still around? The one who played keyboard, for Izreal?

I first heard Iz singing “Over the Rainbow” on a PBS promotional spot (I used to work for PBS and would see these promos over and over again !) I always thought it was such a beautiful, poignant version of the song. Then, of course, came the recent episode of ER where this same song is playing as Dr. Greene, in a scene more beautiful and hopeful than sad, slips into death from a brain tumor. I had no idea that the man who did this lovely music was, himself, already deceased. Even though he’s no longer with us here on Earth, I hope he somehow knows how much his music has touched many, many people !

I hated Judy Garland’s Over the Rainbow until I heard Isreal,s. His voice and music is like warm honey even if the words aren’t right. I have played it so much until I have the whole family singing it. He could have hummed the phone book and it would have been fine. So young and so much warmth comes through. I never knew the man, but I hear the kindest spirit when I listen. Thank you

My husband and I recently vacationed in Kauai and I quite by accident found IZ while I was there. I overheard his music playing in the lobby of the hotel we were staying at and immediately asked the manager to please tell me who it was singing. Our vacation would not have been the same without him. We were so saddened to hear of his passing.

He sings like an angel and we bought several CD’s while we were there and played them constantly.

We’re home now, and still every morning we sit on our back porch and have coffee and listen to IZ. We seem never to tire of it. I loved his saying on the IZ album “We Hawaiians, we live on both sides” I believe it.

Thank you all for sharing him with us.

I recently first heard somewhere over the rainbow/ what a wonderful world when it was played on the episode where Dr. Green passed away on ER. He was in Hawaii with his family, and he was listening to Israel’s version when he passed in the night. It was very sad. My whole family now loves this song. I am sorry to hear that he is no longer with us, but I look forward to learning about him and his music. Jacob

I have just discovered IZ music. It came all over the Atlantic Ocean, even to Germany. And – I´m afraid – I just discovered, that he has already passed away. The music is so beautiful, it will stay forever in my mind.

Hi, this is Christian writing from Germany. This evening I have seen the movie “Forrester”. It es a really great film. But the last song of the film performed by Irael Kamakawiwo is so good, that it stimulated me to download it immediately. And tomorrow I will go shopping and listen to a CD from Israel Kamakowiwo. His voice sounds so good.

Greetings from Germany Christian

I can’t listen to Izzie’s version of “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” without either getting a huge smile on face thinking of the sensitivity and feeling that he gives it or a tear in my eye from knowing that his gentle yet powerful voice has been silenced forever. Rest well Brahdda.

Aloha

I have made 8 trips to Hawaii in the past 10 years and am sorry to say that it took me some time to discover the music of Israel Kamakawiwo’ole. I now have copies of most of his CD’s and will finish the collection this year when I return. The loss to the world was great with the passing of Bruddah Iz. But we are all so fortunate that he has left such a rich legacy of music so that others may enjoy it. Again my sincere sympathy.

Mahalo,

David

I live in california, and I was so happy to hear that someone was actually trying to preserve our culture through music, and that is when i heard Of Iz. His Music is very uplifting and they all make sense. The younger generation can now see how important our culture is through Iz’s music. He brings the life of the island into the main-land showing everyone that us hawaiians are not happy about how Hawaii was annexed into the US, and are fianlly showing it and doing something about it. I was very sorry to hear of his death. He will live on through his family and his music. I regret the fact that i heard of him after his death because it would have been a dream to actually meet him and shake his hand. Aloha Oe Iz.

I was very unfortunate not to have seen Brudda IZ in concert. His music shows us all how big his heart was. I have almost worn out his CD’s. His insite to humanity and his love for people has to be one of the bright spots for anyone who really knows his music and the person. Brudda IZ has to be one of the truly beatiful people that has touched my life. I am not Hawaiian but would like to think of my self as a Hawaiian at heart. It somehow makes me feel closer to this man and others like him. Brudda lives forever in all our hearts. Mahalo Nui Loa. Mai poina!

A song like that makes you look at all the shit going on in this world today and see that the simple things in life are the best. I first heard this recording of Somewhere over the rainbow in Etoy’s commercials. But it wasnt until I was watching my wife and my favorite TV show, ER. You see we have been watching this show since the first episode aired in the early 90’s and have grown attached to many of the characters, especially Mark Greene. Now this was his time to go and he was to pass away quietly in Hawaii with his children and wife. When this aired we were quite taken with him finally leaving the show, but what made the episode remarkable was Israel Kamakawiwo’ole singing the farewell song. Now I am a normal man, a wife, 3 kids and am an Staff Accountant. But I owe this much to Israel, you have touched our hearts with your music and the world has lost a treasure. May your music live on….

Recently IZ’s rendition of “Over the Rainbow” was played almost in its entirety on a very moving episode of the television show “ER.” I had heard a small part of it before on a television commercial but didn’t fully appreciate the beauty of it until hearing a full version. It brought tears to my eyes with it’s incredible tone and feeling. His rendition gave a new, deeper meaning to the song and I’ll never forget it. I think all of our lives are richer for it.

Braddha Iz’s song E Ala `E inspired this letter protesting the Akaka Bill. I am na kanaka wahine who tore up the Akaka Bill. Writing in from Singapore!

TO: Senator Daniel Kahikina Akaka cc: ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, FR: Mohalahaunani great grand daughter of Kahikina Nainoaelua, Kahana O`ahu ————————————————————

Dearest Uncle Kahikina,

First allow me to send a rainbow of my aloha to you, Uncle, in Washington. I pray that you will be open to an URGENT change of action that will benefit our people and to abandon and abort the thought of making our people into a new Indian Tribe through your Akaka Bill. My pu`uwai quickens my spirit to write you, Uncle and to convey my thoughts to you.

What are the silent truths that speak and beckon us to question the wrongs committed against us, na Kanaka Maoli of the Kingdom of Hawaii? Let us look at the canvas of America’s history with our people. The portrait that their actions have painted:

1) A broken treaty with the Kingdom of Hawaii under our beloved Queen Lili`uokalani;

2) Treason;

3) Theft of a Kingdom;

4) Illegal status – Counterfeit Government;

5) Act of War against our peaceful nation;

6) Genocide against our people for more than a century that continues in present times;

The list goes on…surely Uncle, you cannot possible want to be associated with this destructive portrait. Be the hope of our people, Uncle! * “Defend our Birthright to be Free,” Give our Children LIBERTY…I beseech you, Uncle, bring closure to our people’s grief. Echo the voice of our freedom! KU KANAKA!

Lovingly, concerningly and sincerely conveyed,

Mohalahaunani

* taken from E Ala `E song sung by Braddha Iz — recommended to listen in its entirety

I have just now discovered IZ through his masterpiece album “Facing Future.” It had been my hope to tell him that I was in awe to know such an extraordinary artist existed. I am devastated to know of his loss, but I would like to go on record that I believe IZ to be a giant in the art of music, whose work should live a mighty long time.

What a talent! My best to his wife and daughter and family. You were touched by greatness, and it has been my good fortune to learn — however late — of this remarkable man and his extraordinary voice and depiction of the wondrous Hawaiian Islands and its culture.

My best,

Jim Messenger Marietta, Georgia

I first heard IZ on public radio one beautiful day in early spring. He was singing ‘Somewhere Over The Rainbow’, and I was moved by his sweet voice and how well it caught the moment and the day and my own feelings. I contacted the station and learned his name. I have since acquired most of his music and am always amazed at the great talent and feeling of this man who left us all to soon. The world is a better place for his having been here. Aloha IZ!!

Braddah Iz and I go back in the middle stages of the Makaha Sons of Niihau. Hank’s place in Kaimuki and at their Makaha home. I was always treated as family and he took me as a brother. I remember a jam we did at the Pokai Bay restroom with John Koko, Glen Foster, Jeff Nuuanu and a bunch of other guys. The acoustics was awesome and it was just pure kanikapila. Plenty of music, but most of all a sincere feeling of brotherhood. 1997 I lost two precious things, Israel in June and my dad in September. Braddah Iz, “You da man!” ALOHA!

Bruddah Iz, your music is still awesome. You are the epitome of aloha. I consider myself very fortunate to have lived in Makaha in the mid 80’s and to have had the opportunity to see you perform many times with the Makaha Sons of Ni’ihau. I fondly remember the concerts at the Shell, the Sheraton Makaha, Waianae School and the annual Mother’s Day Celebrations at the paneola west of Makaha Beach. I returned to Hawaii a couple of years ago and was very saddened to learn that you were gone and that I would not be able to see you in concert. I have all of your music and listen to it often. God Bless you and may the spirit of Hawaii live eternally in your music.

I first heard IZ on a commercial for E-toys, only I didn’t realize it was him until I heard him on the Finding Forrester soundtrack. I was so inspired by his version of Somewhere Over The Rainbow/What A Wonderful World that I took up the Ukulele. I’ve been trying to figure out the chords on his arrangement of Over The Rainbow but can’t seem to do it. If anyone happens to know those chords and wouldn’t mind taking the time to send them to me I would greatly appreciate it.

You embodied the spirit of aloha and of Hawaii….your message of pure and unconditional love is a lesson for all people to hear and live each day. I am only a Hawaiian at heart, but the culture and beauty that is Hawaii has been a part of me for many years. Mahalo to you IZ for making life a little sweeter for so many people. I love you.

I was visiting the Hawaiian Islands for the first time and was staying in a hut on Kawaii and was listening to a local radio station (KONG) I think it was. I rememember hearing this artist ‘cousin IZ’ and enjoying his music a great deal. A few days later a sad announcement came over the air the DJ announced the passing of this man. . . I bought one of his tapes before heading home to Oregon. (They played IZ’s music on the flight home). Both my boy and I have enjoyed his music since). And whenever I hear his music living on in the popular media I am reminded of the beauty of the man and the Islands. P.S.

Kaku’na ‘o aloha mala’lo Hanale’i mahi’na

Under Hanalei Moon (Lyrics by Larry W. Jones 3-26-2002)

Like the gentle winds that blow there…. is my love for you. Hand in hand we strolled the sands….my love’s still true. Hanalei bay is calling….me back to you. Beams of love are under…Hanalei Moon.

hui (chorus)

Hanalei Moon…..I’ll come to you. Hanalei Moon….You’ll be there too. Gentle winds are calling…. me back to you. Beams of love are under…Hanalei Moon.

(instrumental reprise)

On the isle they call Kauai…. a flower for you hair. Gentle winds and mem’ ries…. waiting for me there. Hanalei bay is calling….me back to you. Beams of love are under….Hanalei Moon.

hui (chorus)

Hanalei Moon….I’ll come to you. Hanalei Moon….You’ll be there too. Gentle winds are calling…. me back to you. Beams of love are under….Hanalei Moon.

Beams of love are under….Hanalei Moon.

I feel such a loss as I’ve only now (March 2002) just discovered the wonder and spirit of Iz’s voice, humour and spirituality through his songs.

After listening to Alone in IZ world, I felt great sadness, as it occurred to me that he may have passed on. Searching on the Web brought me here. Thank you for the opportunity to express my gratitude to Iz for sharing his beautiful gift with all of us. Listening to him brings me to Hawaii – – paradise on earth. Sincerely……

Aloha, My husband and I recently took my 80 year old mother to the Hawaiian Islands. This was a dream come true trip for her. While walking through a store in Maui, we heard Israel singing “Wind Beneath My Wings”. There is something very spiritual about his voice.I find his music moving and listening to it helps me recall the beauty of Hawaii and my favorite Island Kauai. I came to your web page to find out more about him… the man behind the voice. I think your site is a nice tribute. I stumbled upon it from Dogpile ( the mega search engine). I am spreading IZ music across the state of Virginia by sharing it with friends. We cannot find his tapes/cds here. Maybe we can change that. Mahalo, Jacque

It is with great sadness that I learn of the passing of this great artist. I recently heard the version of somewhere over the rainbow (my favourite song) that was made popular by the movie. I didn’t realize who was singing until today when I decided to surf the net as a result of a book I just read called Hotel Honolulu. I had the pleasure of living in Makaha for a year in 1982 and as well as surviving Huricane Iva, I was lucky enough to play lead guitar for Larry Akana and The Rainbow Lights Band. I also had the great pleasure of sitting in at the Sunday jam at the Rusty Harpoon with the Sons. I left Hawaii in 1983 to return to Canada but I have always wondered what hapened to all the great musicians that I met when I was there. I am pleased to learn of the success of these great guys and deeply saddened to learn of the passing of such a great talent.

Today is my 43rd birthday. I was born in 1959 just like IZ. My family lived in Hawaii, in Kailua from 1967 to 1974. My father was born in Wailua, and his father was a Portuquese immigrant who became a sugar cane plantation foreman. My sister Anne has given me IZ’s “Facing Future” CD as a birthday present, and I’m listening to it as I write this. Though our family had some hard times when we were living in Hawaii, there is a lot that I remember with a great deal of fondness and a sense that some of my roots are there. Anyway, to whoever reads this, I want to say thanks for IZ’s music. I never learned a great deal of Hawaiian when we lived there, so I was wondering if there is anywhere to find translations into English of some of the songs on “Facing Future”? You can let me know via e-mail. Thanks again, and Aloha!

I was first introduced to the magical sounds of this man, by a CBC radio host Stuart McClean of the program Vinyl Cafe. It struck such a chord with me, I madly went out to seek and find this music. I found it, and fell in love with the voice and gentleness of him. I was so sad to find out that I was too late to know of him when he was alive. I have been lucky enough to receive a computor, and an opportunity to find this site on the web. I think the human race lost something very special on the 26th of June of 1997. Isreal will live a long time in the hearts and souls that he has entered .

I first heard part of “Over the Rainbow” in a Fisher Price commercial. Everytime I heard it I would feel such a longing in my soul, though it was just a bit of the uke in the beginning. I finally discovered what the song was and who the artist was from the movie “Finding Forrester”. After buying Facing Future and falling for the other music by IZ I took the disc to the Auto Dealership I work for on a slow weekend and played it for the crew of six. After listening to the disc one of them hopped on his motorcycle and went and bought six more copies of the same disc. Then to find this website and read about other people with similar stories is amazing. It’s a very sad thing for such a man to pass so young, but he definitely lives on in more ways than one.

Hello, I just saw the movie Joe Black and was curious to know who sang the song at the end. It is done beautifully. My brother died some years ago and I don’t really know why it matters, but somehow after reading about Iz and the website I wanted to email the maker. It seems like he is your brother. I guess he is no matter what.

I realize that commercialism in some ways separates us all and is an eyesore, but it is also the media that has the potential to bring us together, ironic. It is probably just the human greed involved in the media that separates us so well.

I am oroginally from Guatemala, and moved here at age 3. I am an honor student, and top 3 in my Junior Class (We are the class of 2003, and we rule!!). I have recently heard Israel’s Music, and I think it’s great. He sounds like a very nice, and serene type of person. I only wish I’d heard of him earlier so as I could have appreciated his music more. He was a great man, and his voice shall be remembered forever. I only wish I could have met him, he was a very inspirational singer.

Like many, I found him in a commercial and a movie.

A messenger of love. He left young (like Enoch). Now perfect and incorruptable in body and spirit, his work remains, and still speaks to us left behind.

Brudda Bu says he played a sweet tenor Martin. I’m going to learn to play ukelele too – I want everyone eventually to know how much I love them…

The music and story of Bruddah IZ came late to me. Not until I met my lady friend Haunani, did I come to know his beautiful songs and message.

I am forever touched, even as a non Hawaiian, by the inspiration and pride that he embodied in the Hawaiian people, through my lady Haunani, and through his music, I have come to honor and respect all things Hawaiian. I am hispanic and the cultures are very similar especially the one of Familia or Ohana. Honor and blessings to you IZ, for I would have loved to just shake your hand. Mahalo for what you have taught me, even as I am older, I am wiser too.

I’m a New Yorker who grew up on the East Coast and never had occasion to listen to any Hawaiian artists or music. Then I heard Israel’s version of Somewhere Over the Rainbow, and from the first sound of his voice, I was completely overcome. I felt great joy and and at the same time haunting loneliness in his voice. He was truly blessed with a great gift.

Iz was a marvelous man, a supreme humanitarian who I hold in esteem next to Dr. King, Rosa Parks, Sojourner Truth, Sitting Bull, and Queen Liliuokalani. His death, tragic and seemingly needless should have woken Kanaka Maoli to the following fact: the messenger has passed away, and now we must see if those who heard the message really believe in the principles which Iz espoused or if they merely enjoyed him as a piece of entertainment. This summer, a friend of my fiancee was visiting from France. The night she landed, I asked her if I was the first Hawaiian she had met, and apologized for the low culture that my people live under as a result of their inability to assimilate into contemporary culture. She smiled, and said “Don’t worry, I know Iz’s music.” His music has served as a vehicle to our recognition, around the world. We need more heroes like him, and we need them to stay with us.

Thank you for maintaining this site. I was listening to IZ’s music in my car today and wondered what info I could find online about his life. I discovered his beautiful music while on a solo trip to Kauai many years back….Like everyone else, I fell in love with him. He made it so easy to feel a connection with the Islands and the Hawaiian people and culture. I have returned to Kauai every year, now with my family in tow…we spend as much time as possible in our little rented house and try to become one with these beautiful Islands and the wonderful people….I could go on and on….I have many stories of our travels there that illustrate the Aloha spirit, but no one does it better than Israel Kamakawiwo’ole, with his incredible voice and music. He lives on in my heart forever. Thank you again, Susan Bell Santa Barbara, Calif.

I love Iz’s voice. It’s like a lullaby and makes me proud to be a Pacific Islander. Although not Hawaiian, I find myself standing just a little taller, just a little more proud of my heritage as a filipina. May his voice inspire the People to recognize, cherish, and fight for the heritage that is uniquely theirs. My only regret, that I did not discovery his magic until after he passed from this earth.

Rest in peace, Israel Kamakawiwo`ole, knowing that your voice will inspire and hearten future generations to come.
