Dear Mr. Sugimoto, Sadly, I came to know about the amazing IZ after his passing, but to me he will always represent the magical, living essence of aloha. I visited my best friend one summer, not long after she had moved from San Francisco to Honoka'a, and I have never been the same. I have a hard time talking about it, but after a lifetime of feeling as though I never fit it, I was embraced by the spirit of aloha and the reverence given so generously to the land and its creatures. I was also introduced to IZ's music when I kept seeing bumper stickers on people's cars bearing his image or, simply, 'IZ.' He instantly felt like a long lost friend- his ability to sing so beautifully was only shadowed by his generosity of spirit. When I need to be reminded of hope and grace I listen to IZ with gratitude. His 'Hawai'i78' (I believe that is the title) gives me chills every time I hear it. I wish so much I had been able to meet him, but for now I can listen to his music, hear him saying 'Mahalo nui to all of you. To Hawai'ians, and Hawai'ians at heart.' and i can be greatful that I will never think of Hawai'i without thinking of him.

It has been a few years I have been interested in this man's wonderful work and I look in the right places today and finally foulnd his work on the other side of the world in a Barnes and Noble here in Charleston, SC. As I sat drinking my coffee I felt my tears well up in my eyes as I read Jon de Mello's intro in the Alone in the World'.Album. I only knew his work from the movie soundtracks and the few samples I just listened to at the kiosk. Now I feel like I just blinked and only got to see only a short streak of the life of this wonderful shooting star. Few times I make decisions in my life for the good. I feel like today I made a decision that has enriched my life and made me more appreciative of the sense of hearing. My condolences got out to all of IZ's family and to the world for the loss of such a gem in the diamond mine of life.

It seems that the people whos music I love are dead. Be it Louis Armstrong, Bob Marley, Kurt Kobain, Brad Nowell, and Bruddah IZ. I've been arguing with my girlfriend a lot lately and listening to over the rainbow earlier on the radio made me feel quite emotional and made me realise that our arguments are so petty and pointless. This song reminds me of my girlfriend as i watched the film with her for the first time. I can listen to it over and over, ive never heard such a touching singing voice in my life. I didn't even know who it was sung by until today. I didn't even know what Iz looked like. Now i do... i just want to say thanks to Iz for touching me with this song nearly 10years after his death. I was first touched by this beautiful voice last year when I got married in Maui. Over the rainbow was one of the songs that was on our wedding video. I just purchased the CD Alone in IZ World and listened to it for the first time today. When Iz talked about his family dying it was the first time I have felt any sense of peace since my 17 year old son and only child died in 1998. Who knew that someone I never met that lived on the other side of the world and died way to soon, would be the one to make me feel like it's going to be okay after all. I guess I'm late onto the scene but I wanted to speak about how moving Iz's voice is to me. An absolute thing of beauty and grace. I listen to the albums and feel so much. His music and words have created in me a sadness and love simultaneously. It engenders a feeling of love for the Hawaiian people and the beautiful islands and their traditions. Oh my Sweet Lord, NO. How sad, how truly sad it comes, as here I was putting aside some time tonight, for the sole purpose of jumping a board, and ride upon the web waves to learn more about Israel Kamakawiwo ole, to whom blessed all with-in an ear shot, with his incredible gift of rare natural ability, the kind only a few have ever possessed.
Tears began to well up to one's eyes, and a hollow pit began to form in there in one's heart, as it was only after reviewing the third link in my Google search, that I was led here to this memorial
Once I arrived here, it was with a deep heavy breath, and I was touched by the outpouring of love, and sentiment from those he had touched in his special, caring ways. I then observed the image of his unique and beautiful gaze of deep reflection, and I noticed the dates we were given in honor to the time IZ shared his gifts of life here on Earth.
I was surprised in finding that nearly 10 years gone by since his passing, and so young, as he was born 6 months before me, and I am now only 46. Even so, as it still comes in a realization that has just come to me, it comes unto one of admiration, and yanked upon the emotions, just as if it had sadly happened yesterday, due to my only recent awareness to this beautiful persons gifts.
Though, I had for years heard on many commercials, those soothing, and very familiar Ooo Ooo Ooo Ooo I hadnt known before that moment came at the end of my viewing the movie 50 first Dates when I heard anything following them and there, at that moment, I was frozen within the near haunting tones and vocals as they were connected to the most incredible rendition of original interpretation to an already known musical composition that I have ever heard before or since.
It all came way too short lived however, as the end credits of that movie only played a small portion of it, and left me wanting more. So I contacted Isis who is one of my beautiful Cousins whos Father is Hawaiian and is one to whom has stayed strong in spirit to Her Island Traditions and one who carries Her heritage with great pride.
With her help, I was able to find a vast and remarkable body of work by IZ, and to whom had always came to sing the truths with-in any song, from those stories from in his heart, that always come to touch the soul. It was just moments later that I was surrounded there with-in the sounds filling the air with the gifts that could only be created from within a pure hearts joy. Getting to Know this beautiful music, while listening to it in a relaxed position and ones eyes closed truly allows its special gifts to lift up a person up to another place. Sometimes it was as if his spirit was actually leading us the to his perfect place of harmony, and many times had me dancing atop the clouds, as I followed truly believed I was being illuminated by the brilliance of a souls given light.
IZ will forever be missed , and be loved by those he had touched. Sadness and sorrows given to him there from our hearts to his, and would never come to be something soothing upon his soul, and though difficult to do when just being aware of his loss, just bring to him the continued joy from all that you feel from the special way he gave it unto us.

I was introduced to IZ music by a very dear friend in Sausalito ,CA January 2003. Since that time I have played his music almost daily. The purity of his voice and his emotional inflection never cease tugging at my heart. As a person who has enjoyed many types of music over the almost six decades of my life there is no other musician who has impacted my life as much as dear IZ. I mourn his death as if he were my blood brother. I feel we are truly fortunate to have had such a man share his talent and positively affect our lives. It is now 2006, and I have just discovered the rare talent of Iz. I love his sweet, beautiful voice. It has such a calming effect. I had to go out and buy all of his albums and DVD's. His music is the only music I play now. Every time I play his music (I play it at work, at home, and in the car) I think to myself, what a shame that such a beautiful person has passed. What a terrible waste of talent. I first heard him sing Over the Rainbow at the end of the movie, Fifty First Dates. I had to know who this was. Well, I've been listening to Iz exclusively ever since. I would have loved to have seen him singing in person and to have E-mailed him. I'd only discovered Isreal's music about a year ago..where have I been? I have only one CD Facing Future and must have played it a thousand times. It will be played many times more than that. i first heard this fantastic beautiful voice on radio 1 in the united kingdom 2006. i was automatically transfixed by the sweet melody of a song many times covered although i had no idea that israel had passed away to my shock and sadness.
we had a beautiful singer in the uk called eva cassidy who passed away herself a while ago who also had a beautiful voice and covered this song.
this is a beautiful mix of two songs that have meaningful words.
im sorry to learn of the passing of israel and can only say that once i had heard the over the rainbow - wonderful world version he sang, i will never forget it.

I got to know Bruddah IZ when I met my Husband and I have become such a huge Fan of his, how can you NOT?? I love his voice, so powerful! An Ukulele and a VOICE, what more did he need?? He had it all! What a Man, what a VOICE!
