The first time I heard the music of Israel Kamakawiwo'ole, I was with my family in Maui driving out to dinner. My grandmother who lives on Oahu had lent me facing future. As we were driving along listening to the music I remember thinking it was possibly the most beautiful music I had ever heard in my life. When he died, the world lost one of its greatest artists.

I recently discovered Bruddah IZ from the soundtrack of 50 first dates. I'm saddened to hear that he has passed away. I will, forever, remember his name, and his voice. My future wife and I have decided to make "Over the rainbow," our song. Thank you IZ, for the beautiful voice, and wonderful feelings your songs give.

The First Time I listened to Iz. It was an epiphany of peace and solitude for myself. The voice of an angel. I never knew what Iz looked Like until after his death.I would have never in a million years guessed such a big man would have such a voice. He is truly a beautiful person who has touched me. Kamakawiwo'ole's version of "somewhere over the rainbow/it's a wonderful life" has been used in a norwegian commercial firts aired September 2006. The commercial has been nominated for an award. See it here:

Hi -
I have ALWAYS LOVED the song, "Over The Rainbow," but when I heard IZ's version - I felt so deeply touched.
I love music but this was different. I think very few musicians can reach you throught their music and touch your soul and I felt IZ's version of this song was did that for me. Ever since then, I feel happy and more motivated to make my own life better.
I never knew who the great musician was that sang this verson, but after I saw "50 First Dates," I searched until I found my answer. Ever since then, I listen to the song everday!!!
Thank you IZ for this incredible song (your version) and for touching others around you for your truly amazing musical talent.

Hello, Before 6 Month I bought my first Ukulele and search the Internet for more Ukulele Players and Ukulele music. After a while the first song of iz I heared was Somewhere over....! After that I got cerious and like to hear more of his music. So I bought all of his CD's, and also all DVD's! While watching "The man behind the music" I felt loke I never did before (and I'm near 40 years old). Now my life changed completely, and I decided to make his music more pupular in Germany (and maybe Europa). I can't bring his Spirit to Germany, but I can help keeping his music alive and tell the audience of this fabolous man while performing his songs! I know I'm not able to copy IZ (nobody can do it) but singing his songs made me feel very close to him.
People who hear me singing IZ songs call me "IZ-light". I dont know if anybody can imagine how proud I feel hearing this name for me! But I don't know if it is overbearing to wear this name.

Bruddah IZ lernte ich leider erst 2005 kennen. aber schon nach den ersten takten war mir klar, dass er ein ganz besonderer mensch gewesen sein muss. ich verstehe die hawaiianische sprache nicht, aber ich denke, es ist auch nicht nötig. der klang seiner stimme allein genügt, um seine botschaft zu verstehen: diese unendlichen gefühle, die liebe zu den menschen, zur natur und ganz besonders zu hawaii. solange seine lieder zu den menschen durchdringen wird IZ leben - in den herzen aller, die ähnlich wie er empfinden können.

I am a new fan. Mother of one and the music speaks to me. The vocals are great for children. Over the Rainbow is a lullaby I sang to my son, because it was the only song I knew. When I heard Iz rendition I was in love. His dedication preface on the CD Facing Future also speaks to me. Thank you.

I first heard IZ's rendition of "Over The Rainbow/What A Wonderful World" on an episode of E.R. My wife and I were moved by the scene and the intelligent use of this well loved artist' song. Some years later my son Zack was diagnosed with Non Hodgkins Lynphoma Cancer. We were able to go on a trip to Hawaii (via Make-A-Wish Foundation) and I heard the song over the radio as we were making our way from the airport to our hotel (Aston Waikiki Beach). I knew then that my son was going to beat his cancer. Sure enough 1 year and 3 months later he was pronounced with a clean bill of health. Thank you IZ for making two dreams come true. The beauty of that song and being able to hear it in Hawaii, and the power of your song to let me know that all will be well with my son.
May your spirit live on through your music and may it live within our hearts.

Kia ora, The first time i heard the song Somewhere Over The Rainbow by Isreal Kamakawiwo'ole was from the movie 50 First Dates, i fell inlove with the song again. I love the ukes sound in Isreal's version of it. I've since downloaded the song and now listen to it almost everyday. I just this week became familar with this mans work. I live in Kansas and I heard his signing of "Somehwere over the Rainbow" I got on the internet to see where I could buy it and found this site saying he had died. I offer my sorrow. I'm from Austria and went to Oahu this summer. During this stay I saw IZ CD's in a store. But I didn't buy one because I didn't know which CD I should buy. Of course, Hawaii has a lot of great musicians. But when I came back home to Austria I remembered the IZ CD's and I decided to buy one of them. Now I already have two and I also ordered the songbook. I just wanted to say I saw IZ CD's in the Kings Shopping Center, Market.
First time, EVER to the big Island, Hawai'i. Since I've seen the CD, I couldn't wait to get home and see "Who is this guy?"
I came across "Over the Rainbow / What a Wonderful World".
I can't believe it. Brings tears to my eyes. Not only his voice, but just wanting to head back to Hawai'i.
