In Loving Memory - Israel Kamakawiwo`ole

Lately, the "In Loving Memory - Israel Kamakawiwo`ole Guestbook" has been a difficult task to upkeep on a regular basis. As a result, e-Hawaii.com was generous enough to offer some space where the guestbook process is somewhat automated. I hope you enjoy the "new" look. My apologies for any inconvenience(s) this has caused.

First trip to the Big Island, found the Facing Future album at the Volcano Visitor Center...my wife bought it, I fell in love with this gentle giant's voice. I am sad he has past as he had such great words to pass to many generations, young and old. I will always have this music and the memories from this great land.

Mahalo and Aloha Iz.

I lived in Hawaii for over eight years ; graduated from Chaminade even. During that time Kui Lee was very popular. I thought the music touched us all; but to find that IZ was there and I had not heard his music until I saw a TV program made me realize how much I had missed. Iz had a softness and humanity that transcends time and location. His music and soul touch all who listen and hear what he is saying.

He was a big man; a gentle giant. His message is even more real and touching today. Thank you for keeping Iz's message alive.

I was born on Maui and I have Hawaiian blood as well as the spirit of Hawaii in me. My Tutu taught me the Hawaiian language as a little mo opuna and IZ's music brings back fond memories of Hawaii. My old Ohana was Alii dating back to Kamehameha. The music IZ sings stirs the old spirits of Aloha. We will never forget him or his music.

I never know what to say in these, so I will just say how much it means to me to listen to "Over the Rainbow". The first time I heard it was at the end of "Finding Forrester" and I had to sit back down again, and listen to the whole song. It is such an amazing rendition and still brings me to tears every time I hear it. I hope you know how much of a loss Israel is to the music world. I am glad that his song is used so much and that it will always bring people to search for the roots and introduces them to the wonderful musician that he was.

How wonderful for all of you to have known him. I just recently heard a song of his and fell in love with his voice. Who is this man? Since I had not heard about him. I found out and was so very sad, it made me cry, to think that he was gone. But I also smiled when I thought of him, home with his family. To his wife and daughter and family members and his friends, his body is only gone. His voice and spirit will live on and touching people like me, who will know him by his music and love him as you did. Maggie

A girl very close to my heart died in a car accident in the early morning of April 15,just last week. She was only 19 and the most beautiful girl you could have ever seen.I have had a hard time coping and keeping my head up, until I heard IZ's version of over the raimbow, thoughts of her ran through my head. I didn't even realize I had a smile on my face until the song was over. I can say that this is the song that got my heart one step closer to healing. It will be with me in any future tragedies I may have to overcome, or even just good days in my life. RIP A.Y.D And IZ, thank god for you.

When I first heard his version of Somewhere over the rainbow, I just pulled into work and was running late but, his song came on the radio and I had as soon as I heard the first OH, OH, OH's.. I was hooked and had to listen, it was worth the lecture I received for being late, and it is very sad that IZ is no longer with us, we are certainly missing out on something great!

I know it is hard to believe, but I just became aware of the beautiful spirit and voice of IZ. I first heard his voice on "ER" and was moved to tears not only by the sad story it was placed to, but the touching, magical voice singing the classic song "Over The Rainbow". Since I have heard this song that has haunted me since I first heard it on other movies and even comercials, I have looked for it's performer only to find he is gone from us. I just bought the CD "Alone In IZ World" and love it. To his family and friends, please know that he still touches us with his beautiful spirit. He will be truly missed. Sincerely, Lisa Cannon

Have been hearing Brother Iz's recording of "over the Rainbow" as break music on Coast to Coast with George Noory, and loved that quietly rendered cover of the song.

Finally parked some of his albums in my Amazon wish list. Came onto this website via Google search engine-excellent website-Mahalo!

A great soul gone too soon, but we can still listen to his music.

A former co-worker of mine had to bury his 8 year old daughter last month and at the funeral they played "Somewhere Over The Rainbow-What A Wonderful World". I had never heard that song before and I was absolutely speechless. I had no idea who the artist was until I did a Google search and found this page. I am very saddened to find out that he passed away in 1997.

Without a doubt, this is the most beautiful song I have ever heard in my life.

In November of 2005 my father committed suicide. He had struggled with depression and anxiety for the past 5-10 years. When I heard IZ's version of Somewhere over the rainbow it was perfect. I think I first heard Iz's "Somewhere over the rainbow/It's a Wonderful Life" on ER. I'm sure I wondered at the time about the song, not knowing who it was, or who sung it. Probably just caught up in the moment. Then I heard it again on "50 First Dates," perfect song. Then again I heard again on the Hallmark commercial, not sure that I had heard it before, but I thought, what a great song, who sings it? Googled it, found out that I had heard on the above mentioned movies, and "Finding Forester."

What a voice! What a gift! Can't wait to get to know the rest of his recordings. I can see why he's so missed by everyone. I hope that many more can infected by his music. His music definitely brings a happy tear to my eye.

Just wanted to say that what a waste of talent. I sometimes wonder why a god would take such a person away from us. I am touched by his music, maybe because you can feel it as well as hear it. I cant not think about simple times with family and good easy listening music such as Israel. Many nights my wife and I sit on the couch and listen to his albums and stare at the fire or candles with a quiet smile on our faces. THank you for the time you were here on earth. ALl of this from a man who never met him or even knew existed until a few popular movies came out.

From the first time I heard his voice, I searched to find the man with the voice that moved me to tears. I longed to know more and to hear more. I found him and lost him in the same day. I had found Israel Kamakawiwo'ole only to sadly learn that he had died. I am resigned to listen to music that others were able to enjoy in person. To the family, thankyou for sharing him with the world. He still touches people today. Take joy in knowing that you will see him again one day, and the music will be even sweeter.

I've came across this version from a New Zealand paint commercial and didn't know who sang this song until I watched "50 First Date". The angelic voice of Israel really moved me and so got his song and decided to buy a ukelele so I can learn and sing his version of "Somewhere Over The Rainbow". I was wanting to find his lyric but learned that he had died almost 8 years ago. I'm deeply saddened by his departure and wish his family my sincerest condolences.

Just recently I have had the pleasure of hearing the music ofIsrael Kamakawiwo'ole. I heard Somewhere Over the Rainbow on an episode of Cold Case a show on Sunday nights. I called the network and kept at it until I found out the artist. I have since read all about his life and only wish Israel had taken better care of himself so he could still be here. He has the voice of an angel and I get tears evertime I listen to his songs.I am sure he is greatly missed.

I was not familiar with IZ or his music until watching the movie "50 First Dates" and then hearing the song 'Somewhere Over the Rainbow on a hallmark commercial. So far that is the only opportunity I've had to hear and I found myself craving to hear more than the tidbit given from the commercial or the movie. Trust me when I tell you that I am not a big fan of just any kind of music but, I found this particular artist to be as close to what an angels voice might sound like that I just had to own at least one of his CD's (which I just ordered today). I also just found out when making my order that this wonderfully gifted human being had passed away and it truly, truly saddened me. I wish to extend sincerest condolences to the family of IZ for their loss.

I discovered IZ's music last summer when visiting Maui with a friend. To me as an Oklahoman who has never been privileged to live in such a magical place as Hawaii, it symbolizes the sounds and sights of this wonderful place, as well as giving us some insight into the privileges and problems of growing up Hawaiian. I only wish that IZ had lived to produce more magic. I just feel honored to be one of few haolie's (not sure of spelling) who know about him and treasure his music. Thank you for this website.

I guess ,like others ,I have recently discovered Mr Iz's music.I'm from Texas, and it was a welcome relief from all the music we have here.I heard it on KVET,98.1in Austin, Tx. while I was on the way to work one morning. It had a kind of fantasy to it ,that I could not get away from, and I still hear it in my mind from timt to time. I did not know that Mr. Iz was deceased.Whoever he was ,he had a wonderful mind, and a soothing voice that made a person drift off into a dreamlike state and wish along with him. I'm anxious to find out more about Mr.Iz and his music, even though I know now that there will be no more ............a really sad shame. Cincerely.......John J......Boerne, Tx.

His music is magical. I live in Southern California and in the midst of traffic and chaos I turn on IZ to feel a sense of calmness and serenity. He is just magical...

Aloha Israel! You are still living through your music here on our "Big Island" of Deer Isle off the coast of Maine. My heart smiles as I listen to, and share your music with people who love it or are hearing it for the first time with me. Your songs keep me conscious of the struggles with which you and others were/are challenged. At the same time, just to listen to you sing helps my stress levels to plummet and gives me inner peace. Hope you feel it too and know how beloved you became and your music is. Mahalo nui loa, Bruddah IZ!!! From a numbah-one-fan, Charlo

His song, somewhere over the rainbow changed my life. I had no idea that he was dead. I thank him and those who helped him for everything that they have done for many people. He will be truly missed. Thank you so much for giving me the signs that I needed to point myself in the same direction as my destiny.

I am fortunate to have found his music. My husband and I had our honeymoon in Hawaii FEB 14. 2004, and I fell in love with his beautiful voice. Unfortunately, it was within the last year that I learned of him, I would of loved to seen him in person, I am absolutely sure that he was an amazing presence to be around. Thank you for your music. Amanda

Israel was a gift to the Earth from above for sure. The man may not have had much physically or even materially, but as you can tell just by listening to his songs, he had a spirit that can truly draw you in and allow you to appreciate who you are and what it means to be human. Thank you Iz.

I recently visited Oahu and my friend played the music of "IZ" and told me the story of this great man. I pray his wife and daughter will be well and able to carry on as well as possible. What a loss, but heaven gained a great individual for certain.

I never knew him, but at a funeral of a lost soul in Oregon, they used the songs of Israel, and so I started to research, and found a wonderful man with great music. I wish he was still here to give us such beautiful music. I send my best to you.

I took my parents, daughter, and brother on a trip to Honolulu in 2000. I found IZ'z music there. My husband was a singer, guitarist, and songwriter as well and died of a stroke at the age of 28, in 1994. We had only been married 6 weeks. His music lives on like IZ's as does his legacy. (www.stevegruden.com) He was with Atlantic Records and Warner Brothers Records and his music touched the soul as well. I felt a connection with Iz the moment I heard his voice. I wept when I read the booklet from Alone in IZ World. Thank you all for keeping his magic alive - Sheri

We first heard his rendition of 'Over the Rainbow' on the movie Meet Joe Black. We'd never heard of him before, and yet we're so sad to learn that he is no longer with us. We plan to purchase a number of his albums and look foward to many hours of listening enjoyment.
