In Loving Memory - Israel Kamakawiwo`ole

Lately, the "In Loving Memory - Israel Kamakawiwo`ole Guestbook" has been a difficult task to upkeep on a regular basis. As a result, e-Hawaii.com was generous enough to offer some space where the guestbook process is somewhat automated. I hope you enjoy the "new" look. My apologies for any inconvenience(s) this has caused.

didn't know much about IZ until tonight... thought I'd look up THAT song on the net... The one that makes me feel, well... good. what a song... what an incredible version... it conveys so much in it's simplicity... that it's hard for me to listen to it without getting lost in it, without misting up... there's just something about it. And yes, it may be one of, if not the most beautiful songs this music lover has ever heard.

I just discovered Israel's version of "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" from the movie 50 First Dates & my fiance and I have decided to have it played for our last dance at our wedding reception.

Israel had a beautiful voice and his rendition of this song is the most beautiful I have ever heard. It makes me cry every time I listen to it and I'm just not the crying kind of female.

Thank you for sharing your beautiful gift with the world, Israel. You have surely brought light into many lives.

God rest your soul & bring to peace to your loved ones. I'm so sorry I didn't learn of you years ago.

We visited Maui back around 1997-1998, then cruised all the islands in 2004. It's the most beautiful state in the U.S. IZ's songs say it all. We enjoy listening to his CDs.... especially during our cold winter months. God Bless IZ and his family and friends.

I didn't know anything about IZ until today, when I finally decided to find out who sings the version of "Somewhere Over the Rainbow/What a Wonderful World" on the "Meet Joe Black" soundtrack. Owning a ukulele, I wanted to learn to play the tune. What a wonderful piece of music. One of the sites that came up in Google was this one. May you rest in peace.

I think his music is just wonderful to hear, his voice is warm, and friendly. He has talent. You have to remember,it's on the inside that counts. Dispite His condition,he was very loving. Somewhere over the rainbow, that song i like, and when you hear it,Iz is actually somewhere over the rainbow,if you think bout it. Iz will be remembered always, and forever in our hearts. And he did have a good heart.

My Wife & I just returned from 2 weeks on Maui...

While we were there, I was *haunted* by a song I kept hearing, in stores, at the Luau, everywhere....

Never had I been moved by such a piece of music. Chills up & down my spine, goosebumps....

After asking around, someone said it was "IZ". Who??

I then found his CD's in stores there, and I read up on Bruddah IZ here on the net.

That haunting song is "Hawai'i 78" - The most moving piece of music I've ever heard.

What a truely amazing man, his music makes me far more emotional than a 44 year old man should be.

Mahalo, Bruddah IZ, your music lives on....

How it brings tears to my eyes when i hear Israel Kamakawiwo'ole sing "Somewhere over the Rainbow" I heard it first at the end of "50 First Dates," but never really paid attention to the beauty of this song until today when i watched the movie again. It saddens me that Israel Kamakawiwo'ole has died 7 1/2 years ago, for I will never be able to hear him sing this live until I go to heaven. ]

Rest In Peace Israel Kamakawiwo'ole

You are loved.

I live in Fairborn, Ohio and I heard the music of Isreal "IZ". The song "Over the Rainbow" was and is so profound it almost took my breath away. It remainds me of a time past in such a profound manner. Isreal is a person who I did not know until today. How could I have missed him; a giant of a man only through his music. He has truly changed Hawaii, me and the rest of this land "Over the Rainbow". May my soul be with this great singer. His music will always be with me (forever).

I first heard the angelic music of Bruddah Iz on the ER episode where Dr. Green died. I have been looking since then for the music of this golden voiced man. I finally found it after watching 50 first dates. I am anxiously awaiting the arrival of "Facing Future" so I can hear more than just the sample clips I have heard. Sadly we will not hear any new music from this gentle soul, but we can hear what he left us over and over. I plan to at least. I don't profess to know much of the Hawaiian language, but I do know how to say thanks.

I first heard IZ's version of the song "over the rainbow" a little over a year ago. Luckily, I was able to locate the CD at a store. I truly, enjoy the music. I am an avid surfer from NJ and have always been interested in the Hawaiian culture due to my surfing roots. My 8 year old son and my 5 year old daughter enjoy the music. In fact my son listens to the CD every night to help him fall asleep. He loves the first track "Hawaii 78" and of course "over the rainbow". When I first bought it I was not aware that IZ had passed away years earlier and was saddened when I found out. I offer my late condolences to his wife, daughter and family. I have played the songs for many people and they all love his voice. It is sad because our society could use more positive people like IZ and his life was cut short at such a young age.

Sincerely, Steve

to say that life isn't fair wouldn't be fair. his life served a purpose and did above and beyond how he expected to turn out. just this site alone says enough let alone all the others about Iz. a real man, an inspiration to us all, he knows and sees how we all appreciate and love his music. I'm 28 and listen to all kinds of music from house to rap and everything else in between. his music is unlike any other. Judy Garland aint got nuthin on Iz, not that she's a bad singer, don't get me wrong, but Iz brought Somewhere Over the Rainbow to a whole 'nuther level.

Israel,

Eh Brudda, I told you, you waz going to be famous. You did write and sing what we talked about in Kaimuki HS. That day I thought we was going beef. Bra, I couldn't see you waisting dat talent you had without making a statement on behalf of us dieing Kanakas. It's bitter sweet like da kine star fruit. I told you that day it was going to have more meaning when we dead. That was the same voice that told me you wasn't going to live a long life. Bra, Why did you ask dat? That voice that told me dis stuff came from the winds blowing the leaves on the tree tops, that day in the school yard in Kaimuki HS. It still freaks me out what happened that day. "Ua mau ke ea o ka aina i ka pono". You bugga, You right, I neva said it right and I still can't. Bra, I still one lost Hawaiian. Well, it's been a long time but it's time I said this to you. To think a singing man from Hawaii could make a biker from Minnesota cry! His music and voice made tears instantly well with a confusing mixture of sadness and enlightment. The first time I heard "over the rainbow", was in the movie "meet Joe Black". My bride had to shut off the DVD, as I kept playing it over and over. I plan on purchasing all his CD's and a video. I didnt know him or his music before his passing, but I feel his soul in his music. My very late condolences to his family and friends. He is a "Brudda" to all!

What beauty was given to this man in the form of a voice so divine that upon presentation of his album I found myself screaming with joy, unaware of my reaction it was so natural. Yes I have played his album everyday and in my worst moments his voice lifts my spirits. My wonderful husband sought out his album for me and now will finish with his entire collection. He must now be singing with the angels in heaven. Lola

September 22, 2004, My dear Friend Adam "wojo" Wojtalewic committed suicide. "Somewhere Over The Rainbow/What A Wonderful World" was played at his funeral. I have been looking all over for this CD, and my mother bought it for me today. I just found out that Israel Kamakawiwo'ole, died. My condolences to his family and friends. I wanted to thank "Iz" for his beautiful voice and for singing this song. It has made ammends to my life.

With love, Brett Andrew

Just heard "the" song, Somewhere over the Rainbow and have learned about Iz. What a beautiful talent. I will definitely be buying some of his music and sharing it with everyone I can. Beautiful, just simply beautiful.
