In Loving Memory - Israel Kamakawiwo`ole
Lately, the "In Loving Memory - Israel Kamakawiwo`ole Guestbook" has been a difficult task to upkeep on a regular basis. As a result, e-Hawaii.com was generous enough to offer some space where the guestbook process is somewhat automated. I hope you enjoy the "new" look. My apologies for any inconvenience(s) this has caused.

I am new to IZ's music, but I have never heard a more beautiful voice in my life. My twin sister introduced me to his music. When I heard him sing "somewhere over the rainbow", my heart melted and it brought tears to my eyes. It still does every time I play it. My father passed away not too long ago and this song reminds me of him, but also with the sadness it brings an unreal peacefull feeling. It makes me think my father is okay. I thank him for that and his voice was that of a true Angel from Heaven. Where he is now. Thank you IZ. May God Bless Your Family. Cat

I first heard of "Iz" from my cousin Shelly (who is half Hawaiian), this past summer. For Christmas this year, much to my delight, my family purchased "Facing Future" for me. I find his music and voice to be very beautifully haunting, my favourite piece being "White Sandy Beach of Hawai'i" - I could listen to that piece over and over again and never tire of it. His family must be very proud to have had him in their lives and to me his voice will always be there.

You are my hero! I made a pillow case in your honor and now sleep and cry on it every night. I miss you so much. Just remember the good times. I'll see you somewhere over the rainbow. The only thing that matters is that I was loved by you.

I love his music and was sad to hear of his death in '97. I am a new fan and was hoping for a new cd to come out, but, sadly, one will never again come out. We can only sit and listen to his beautiful music full of sadness. We are able to cry to Hawaii '78, smile to Somewhere Over the Rainbow/What a Wonderful World, and laugh to Hawaiian Suppa Man. The only way to really express his greatness is to spread his music, tell people about it, so that his music is heard over the radio. A large grin came to my face when i heard IZ's song come over the TV at the end of the fairly recent movie Finding Forrester. It was the first time that I had ever watched the credits six times. God bless you Israel Kamakawiwo'ole. May you rest in peace. We will forever cherish and protect your music

Today while in the music store, came across 'IZ' knowing nothing about his music just had a feeling I would love his voice and songs. I was listening to him as I got online to find out more about him, only to sadly find out he has passed. What a wonderful, gifted soul, who was able to touch so many.

When I heard Izzy's version of 'Somewhere over the Rainbow' in the movie 'Meet Joe Black' I was intrigued by the simplicity and beauty of the arrangement and it made me think of Taj Mahal, but my TV was too small and fuzzy to read the credits and I never learned the artist's name. Time passes.....I just saw the movie 'Finding Forrester" this evening, and upon hearing the same song again, I just HAD! to know who the artist was. Thanks to the Internet, I arrived at this site, only to find that the Israel had passed away over 5 years ago. While I am saddened by the loss of such a beautiful songster as Israel, my heart is lifted by the purity of this man's vocal expression. I hope to hear and to learn much more about Israel Kamakawiwo'ole in the future. With his blessing I shall be playing more of his music.
Thanks,

PS please tell me how to properly pronounce Israel Kamakawiwo'ole's name

At this late date, I have, only now, discovered Israel "IZ" Kamakawiwo'ole and his music. It seems to me he loved every minute he was able to sing. His voice is breathtakingly magnificent! I am saddened he had to leave this world at such a young age. It was a heart rendering loss of talent. However, he will live on in his music...even more in the hearts of his family, friends and fans. They have their memories with them all the time.
Thank you for this guestbook and the chance to express my thoughts and feelings.

I'm Australian, but I like to think that I'm one of those that Iz describes as "Hawaiians at heart", and so is that very special person who introduced me to his music, during my second visit to Hawaii in 2000. I went home with "Facing Future" and it very quickly became one of my favourite CDs. I now have three others, including the wonderful "Alone in Iz World", which is playing as I write this. I love how I can listen to Iz, and his beautiful voice will surround and soothe me, and it's like I'm back in magical, healing Hawaii again. He is the soul and spirit of the islands. Wherever you are, Brudda Iz, thank you so very much for the wonderful gift you gave us - through your music you'll live forever. Mahalo and aloha.
PS - Thanks for the duck joke!

Although its been 5 years since his passing I just like to say that I still hold a great lost in my heart for him. I listen to his songs often, and it makes me smile with pride when my children pick his CD to listen to over other ones. For that I know the messages which he left in his songs have been heard. I Thank you for giving our children hope and pride in who they are. Mahalo nui...Kahea

I learned of this wonderful singer in ’95 and was amaze by his incredible voice and the way he could bring peace and contentment to the soul. I was diagnosed with cervical cancer in ’95 and had multiple complications that required several major operations followed by long periods of hospitalization with much pain and suffering. Izzy and his beautiful music got me through these endless days and nights. I went to this hospital an average of once every three months for seven years and I’ve never gotten tired of listening to Izzy’s music. My mother loves Hawaii and Izzy is one of her favorite artists. He is greatly missed but will live on in our hearts through his music. I love the way you have chosen to honor Izzy with your bannerless web site. That’s awesome! Sincerely, Lynn Peterson

In my life I recently experienced an emotional upheaval. On my travels from Alaska, my home for nearly 7 years, to California, I was alone, with my anguish and pain. I had the Lord, and Iz to comfort me in my travels. I listened to his music, listened to his words and they were uplifting to my soul and spirit. My life is better but a slow recovery. Much Aloha to Iz, his family and God for bringing such a gentle man into this world.

I echo the sentiments expressed by T. Gary on the fan link (almost verbatim...without the flash intro). The one change I would like to express is that I'm not in middle America...I'm in the thick of things in New York City. Here, the exciting myriad of sights and sounds too often gets lost as they blur together. The 'Over the Rainbow/Wonderful World' medley in Finding Forrester stood out and re-clarified music for me.
I've just this moment learned of his death through this website. IZ: Thank you, wherever you are.

I am developing a healing website for cancer patients on the mainland and I love Iz's music. I would like to carry the entire line on my website as a tribute to him and also to turn other patients onto his wonderful way of touching lives. I am a breast cancer patient and this is my gift back to Iz for the healing his music brings me. If someone could please let me know where I can buy his CD's from a distributor of his music I would appreciate it.

This man has been an influence for the hawaiian people and non hawaiian alike. A man not only known for the size of his body, but more so the enormity of his heart. I realize how lucky I was to have been in the presence of such a great man. His legacy will live on, through us, through his music, and in out hearts. I love this gentle giant with all my heart, and my children and their children will also. His strenght and fearless courage for the inevatable will never leave memory. thankyou iz,I love you

Since seeing "Meet Joe Black" and hearing the melody, I've pondered who I was listening to. I'd hear it on a commercial and it would stop me where I was to listen to it. As with many busy people, I didn't get the chance to find out who this voice belonged to until I was knocked down a peg or two by illness and had idle time on my hands. I'm sorry this man died before I had the chance to know him. His voice is as sweet and simple as any I've ever heard in my life. I, for one, will never forget the music.

My thoughts coincide with the email posted from T. Gary...Israel Kamakawiwo 'ole had a very gifted voice, and it's too bad we didn't have the chance to know of him when he was alive. Hearing "Somewhere over the rainbow" always touches my heart.

My wife I had heard about IZ atop Haleakela Crater (House of the Sun) in Maui from a park ranger in the souvenir shop just below the summit. We knew of his “Somewhere Over the Rainbow/What a Wonderful Word” but little of him. An emotional story from the park ranger convinced us to buy “Facing Future” and we played it all the way down Haleakela. His music brought what we were seeing into remarkable poignancy. When we got to Lahina, we bought four more of his CD’s. We were and still are completely overtaken with emotions we hardly know how to explain whenever we listen to his music. We wish his family well and look forward to learning more about IZ!
