In Loving Memory - Israel Kamakawiwo`ole

Lately, the "In Loving Memory - Israel Kamakawiwo`ole Guestbook" has been a difficult task to upkeep on a regular basis. As a result, e-Hawaii.com was generous enough to offer some space where the guestbook process is somewhat automated. I hope you enjoy the "new" look. My apologies for any inconvenience(s) this has caused.

A young man that was born and partially raised in Hawaii committed suicide a few weeks ago. His mother request some of IZ's music be played at the funeral. It was the most incredible and absolutely the most beautiful voice and music that I have ever heard. I went out and bought ever CD of his I could find. I have never been to the Islands. But I feel that I have.I now would like to visit and am definitely going to study the culture. Amazing the death of loved ones can open doors that would not other wise be opened. Something as simple as music and an incredible voice can change the meaning of a senseless tradegy. That you IZ and watch over Eryck for us.

I have worked and done charity visits to many folks of size up to 1000 pounds and I see a recurrent theme that many have great spirits. I recently met a nurse who worked with Israel at the time of his passing and she encouraged me to visit his music. I am now a big fan. Having been competed in martial arts and specialized in the care of those of size as a physical therapist, Israel's spirit is reflective of the many soles I have worked with to restore walking and independence. He's spirit does achieve a very special expression that few have. His music is full of life.

I continue to present my programs to help healthcare porfessionals nationally to improve care for those of size and before each program I now listen to Israel's music for inspiration. Micahel Dionne Choice Physical Therapy, Inc. 5233 Indian Cirlce Gainesville, GA 30506 www.bariatricRehab.com

I only recently discovered IZ. After hearing "Somewhere over the Rainbow" on ER, I purchased Facing Future. I have not stopped listening to it since. The people of Hawaii were truely blessed to have this man. I am sorry that I only now have learned of him. I know that everyone and anyone that hears the music of IZ will be listening to a gift. I know the people of Hawaii miss this man. My best wishes to the Family of IZ, and to the people of Hawaii, Thanks. I have been touched.

Dear IZ: I was walking in Pier One one afternoon this week and heard your song "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" it haunted me and at the same time gave me a sense of peace and love to hear such a beautiful voice with such an expression of love. I hurried home and searched the Web for more information than the girl at the store could give me. To my dismay, I learned that on the same day that I found your beautiful music I had already lost you. I am now reading everything I can and I have ordered CD's. Thank you IZ, I know you can hear us singing your praises. And as for the Hockey Cluck, He or She must listen with their brain only and obviously there is no love or emotion there.

I did not have the good fortune to meet this man in his lifetime, but his music has certainly spoken volumes to me.

We were blessed to be able to visit Kauai in the year 2000 and fell in love with Iz's homeland. We know now what he was singing about!

Such a lovely man with such a lovely message.

I lost my Daddy this year. He too was a big man with an even bigger heart. In many ways "IZ" reminds me of Daddy. I'm sure he also lived by the same words my Daddy did: "Work like you don't need the money. Love like you've never been hurt. Dance like nobody's watching. Sing like nobody's listening. Live like it's Heaven on Earth." I know there is a heaven and I hope that Daddy has introduced himself to "IZ".

I had never even heard of "Bruddah IZ" before six days ago. Some friends of mine played "Somewhere over the Rainbow" for me and I almost literally cried from the beauty contained in this man's voice. Never had this som touched me before until I heard it sung by a man with so much love and compassion in his voice. I searched the web and found this site. I was really sad to read how IZ died. I would have very much like to have seen him in person, or even to have met him. If nothing else, just to tell him how his music really touched me. Maybe it would have mattered, maybe it wouldn't have. Anyway, I will be buying as much of his music as I can get my hands on, I know that much. Much love to his family and friends.

I first heard Israel When my girlfriend returned from the beautifal Island of Maui last Feb. I listened to his "Facing Future" cd and was in awe. His voice brought peace to my soul. his traditional Hawaiian Music made me treasure the natural things in life, Like Hawaii was to him. I wish, as I am sure all of you do, that a man like him, should be portrayed and looked up to all over the world. Hawaii Is a culture within itself, and an attraction for many. If I could meet Israel one time, I would shake his large hand, and tell him, "Thank you for showing me tradition at its finest. And thank you for all the memories you will give me." Hi, I am so touched by Bruddah IZ's rendition of "Over the Rainbow". I am creating a video to promote the Elks Children's Eye Clinic which serves children up to age 18 who need eye care. I would like permission to use IZ's rendition of "Over the Rainbow" in the video.

The mission of the clinic is to give the gift of sight to children who may not otherwise be able to afford the treatments that are required. Who do I contact for permission? This is strickly a non-commercial, non-profit use of his material. thanks, Joannah Vaughan vaughajo@ohsu.edu

During my current visit to Maui I became so enthralled by the music of IZ. I purchased several CD's. His music makes me sad, happy and brings back so many wonderful memories of the island all at the same time. He truly is Hawaii. Thank you for the many hours of listening pleasure. My thoughts and prayers to his family, and Mahalo for continuing to allow us the pleasure of hearing this great singer now and forever.

I know so little about IZ, but I heard his rendition of Somewhere Over the Rainbow on a TV program and I've been haunted by his voice since. I am converted and am trying so hard to learn more about this exceptionally expressive, soulful person's music.

I am always so surprised that a person can travel all the way to Hawaii and not know how to spell KAUAI....and think the whole time they are on the island of"Kawaii"???....but luckily for them they left with the most beautiful music on the planet.

I visited the island of Kawaii recently. It was my first trip to the islands of Hawaii. Having grown up in the tropics myself, I was entranced by the lush green vegetation, the blue waters, and the beautiful people.

There was something else that held my interest -- haunting songs sung to the ukelele -- that I heard frequently. And one voice impressed itself on my memory. I found myself humming these beautiful songs quite often. I did not have a clue about the singer.

While waiting at the airport to depart from Kawaii, I heard the beautiful song "Over the Rainbow" being played in one of the gift shops. I ran over to ask the lady at the counter whose music this was. She said Israel. I bought the CD instantly.

Having returned home, I played the songs and started reading about Israel from the CD cover. I was extremely saddened to discover that the singer of these haunting songs had passed away a few years ago. I felt this sudden sense of loss.

It is amazing how powerful an effect his music has! Long live his memory! I have discovered IZ world which is a treasure.

Best regards to his family. Please write if you get a chance.
