In Loving Memory - Israel Kamakawiwo`ole

Lately, the "In Loving Memory - Israel Kamakawiwo`ole Guestbook" has been a difficult task to upkeep on a regular basis. As a result, e-Hawaii.com was generous enough to offer some space where the guestbook process is somewhat automated. I hope you enjoy the "new" look. My apologies for any inconvenience(s) this has caused.

Iz was a marvelous man, a supreme humanitarian who I hold in esteem next to Dr. King, Rosa Parks, Sojourner Truth, Sitting Bull, and Queen Liliuokalani. His death, tragic and seemingly needless should have woken Kanaka Maoli to the following fact: the messenger has passed away, and now we must see if those who heard the message really believe in the principles which Iz espoused or if they merely enjoyed him as a piece of entertainment. This summer, a friend of my fiancee was visiting from France. The night she landed, I asked her if I was the first Hawaiian she had met, and apologized for the low culture that my people live under as a result of their inability to assimilate into contemporary culture. She smiled, and said "Don't worry, I know Iz's music." His music has served as a vehicle to our recognition, around the world. We need more heroes like him, and we need them to stay with us.

I have just found the music of Israel and was so taken with him and his voice. I felt an instant kinship. When I found out he was no longer alive and was so young I was so sad and almost in tears. I too lost my husband in 1998. My condolences to his family and all who loved him.

Like many, I first heard Israel's music on the soundtrack of Meet Joe Black, awhile back actually, while I liked the song, I never really looked much into it. I heard it once again in Finding Forrester, and struggled to remember where I heard it. I fell into a world of wonderful, not just Over the Rainbow/What a Wonderful world. Thank you IZ for introducing me to a whole new world of music. My condolences to family, friends and fans alike.

Mahalo, bruddah IZ for being a part of this earth and sharing your music and spirit with those of us that are Hawaiin at heart.

Smiles and tears in the same 30 seconds. I was just introduced to Iz and was instantly enchanted by his music. In a lust to hear more I read about his life and find out he has passed away years before I met his music. This is a happy and terribly sad moment. God Bless Iz! You live by meeting new people everyday.

Thank you for maintaining this site. I was listening to IZ's music in my car today and wondered what info I could find online about his life. I discovered his beautiful music while on a solo trip to Kauai many years back....Like everyone else, I fell in love with him. He made it so easy to feel a connection with the Islands and the Hawaiian people and culture. I have returned to Kauai every year, now with my family in tow...we spend as much time as possible in our little rented house and try to become one with these beautiful Islands and the wonderful people....I could go on and on....I have many stories of our travels there that illustrate the Aloha spirit, but no one does it better than Israel Kamakawiwo'ole, with his incredible voice and music. He lives on in my heart forever. Thank you again, Susan Bell Santa Barbara, Calif.

I love Iz's voice. It's like a lullaby and makes me proud to be a Pacific Islander. Although not Hawaiian, I find myself standing just a little taller, just a little more proud of my heritage as a filipina. May his voice inspire the People to recognize, cherish, and fight for the heritage that is uniquely theirs. My only regret, that I did not discovery his magic until after he passed from this earth.

Rest in peace, Israel Kamakawiwo`ole, knowing that your voice will inspire and hearten future generations to come.

Ciao.
