In Loving Memory - Israel Kamakawiwo`ole

Lately, the "In Loving Memory - Israel Kamakawiwo`ole Guestbook" has been a difficult task to upkeep on a regular basis. As a result, e-Hawaii.com was generous enough to offer some space where the guestbook process is somewhat automated. I hope you enjoy the "new" look. My apologies for any inconvenience(s) this has caused.

Every time I listen to the voice of "Bruddah IZ", I feel blessed to have his words and his music echo in my mind. Though we all feel the pain of loss, some more than others, we must be happy for our Bruddah, for he is in a far better place now. He may be gone, but I believe that one day, we all will be together in some other place. And we will all sing with our Bruddah, no worries brah. Until that day, I, all of us can keep Israel in our hearts. The music he gave the world is a reminder of how great a man he truly was. Mahalo, Bruddah Iz. We see you soon.

Aloha, Jon

Saw the Brudda for the last time when he came to the 4 Queens in Las Vegas in 95?. He was such an impressive spirit and his playing was so memorable. My wife and I met in Hawaii in 1984 and fell in love to the songs of the Makaha Sons and of course we went to all their concerts and saw them at all the ho'olaulea's and KCCN concerts = IZ was always there with his ukulele almost completely covered by his hands = he will be with us forever. We can only look forward to hearing him play up there -- cause I am sure he is doing just that right now. Our last trip to Hawaii was in June of 1997. He passed the day we departed and somehow we felt partly responsible for leaving the land that we and he loved so much.... Tom Bracken Now living in State College, PA 814-278-2021

I have enjoyed this artist's music as well as I have enjoyed Neil Diamond, Frank Sinatra, Merle Haggard, and Garth Brooks. I only wish his health had allowed him to entertain as many years as they have. He has blessed my Arkansas heart. "In Dis Life" I wept the first three times I heard it. This song will probably be played at my next wedding (whenever that is). I am so proud that AOL featured him on their welcome page so I could "find" him. Aloha..

Hello, I am new to Hawaii and wasn't getting into the island culture. I saw a story on TV about Israel Kamakawiwo'ole. Then I heard some of his songs on the radio. I am now starting to appriate the Hawaiian music.

I did not know that he has past away. That is very sad to hear. The world has lost a treasure.

Israel Kamakawiwo'le... Sunday mornings in my house have always consisted of eggs, rice, bacon, kimchee, poi, pancakes and music. Maybe sometimes it was just rice and eggs, but their was always music and family. Since I was little it has been like Gabby and Hui Ohana, Melvine, Three Scoops, Sunday Manoa, Makaha Sons, Hapa, Ledwaard, Sonny, Alfred, The Kahumoku Bros, Rev. Kamakahi, The Beamer Bros., Kuo and Iz. There are many more to mention but thats not important. I would always want Iz and Gabby. After kou-kou, I would get my guitar and try to be "...my cousin Mel Amina...". Smiles every time I tell you!!! Thanks and Aloha to all the Kamakawiwo'ole ohana. P.S. I don't have much money, and sometimes I cannot have da poi or da bacon or da kimchee or da pancakes or da eggs or even da rice, but I always have da Iz and am all the more richer for it.

It was so enchanting I had to hunt it down and was amazed and very pleased to open a door to a treasure trove of wondrouse Hawaiian music. I suggest you update your website to include more recent events, including the use of his song in the movie.

Senior citizens from Colorado, my wife and I were blessed - truly blessed - to have seen and heard Bro' Iz and the Niihau Sons of Makaha many times during our stay in Hawaii some 10 years ago. His voice, his music, his deep love of his islands came to personify Hawaii for these 70-year- olds, and even now, years after his untimely passing, when we think of those wonderful islands, we think of this gentle, talented, gracious, gifted son of Niihau. Iz lives, and we are all the better for his wonderful gifts. Thank you, dear brother.

You will always live on through your sweet music. Everyone visiting my home from the mainland leaves with your CD's and thus your music is shared throughout the USA! Some people have called me to ask me to send them your CD's. Almost each day I start out with your sweet voice and meaningful songs, I feel complete. You will never ever die! Often I go down to Waianae and sit where you are, and I feel your spirit is there. I pray continously for your family, loved ones and friends.

I have never heard of IZ until one day I saw him on the front page of American Online. It sadly spoke of his death, and what a legend he had become. After seeing this I immediately went and got some of his songs to listen to. I must say that I really admire IZ, and his music really hit me deep down in the soul. I know he is in Heaven, and I wish his family the best of luck for the future. I just know that IZ lived a wonderful life, because he got to share the music he loved with the world. Though he did not live long, he achieved his goal and reached many peoples' heart. He will live on in all of us.

Commercials are the bane of our lives. But from time to time they amuze or touch us, and we remember them. A few bars of music affected so many of us, and we went looking for the man who sang them -- only to find out that he died before we knew he was alive. That's a shame.

But that etoys commercial acquainted us with the wonderful world of Iz, and while there'll be no new music (another pity), we will have what he crammed into his short years.

Thanks, Iz. I'm sorry I didn't have the chance to thank you while you were here. Rest in peace in the beautiful water of your beautiful world. I didn't know you, but I won't forget you.

Best of luck and best of good wishes for his family.

Aloha, brudda.

Dear Family, I just heard the version of "Somewhere Over the Rainbow/What a Wonderful World". My sister said she heard it in a movie and downloaded it. I have to tell you that when I began to listen to the voice i said to her "he's native, i can tell". Until last night i have never heard of him before to be honest. Now that i have heard of him and all the beautiful music he sang I am now a full fan. I am sorry about his death and offer my condolnenses to the entire family. I opened up AOL one day, and I see this large man with long hair in front of me, with the caption underneath it, saying "Who IZ this man?" Curious, I click on his image. I read a few lines, about how he wrote the song for Etoy's "Firefly" Commercial. I decided to check it out. I open up Napster, and Copy-Paste his name to the Artist blank because I never thought I'd be able to spell his full name. I begin to download the song, and being the impatient person I am....was...I select Play Now. That was a few days ago. Since then, that song, "Over the Rainbow" has been played more times than is decent to say. I have fallen in love with his music, and to find out that he died not too long ago, I am filled with saddness. I feel like I just met a great friend, and a few days later, they die. Wonderful artist, and from reading his biographies....a Wonderful Man. ~Justin

I recently viewed "Finding Forester" at a theatre in Kailua Kona. In the last two minutes of the movie I heard IZ and just got chicken skin. I didn't know his music was in the movie! People who were leaving the theatre sat down just to listen to IZ and wait to see his credits. When the credits rolled by...applause broke out and you could hear people say, "Yeah, IZ!". It made me reflect on how lucky I felt to have gotten the chance to hear IZ live in concert at the Kona Surf a few years back. He truly is a legend. And sorely missed by all of us.

Bruddah Iz always has and always will be in the hearts of the members of my ohana. I am listening to one of his songs right now. My mother was a classmate of Koko(Jerome) and Louis Kauakahi. Ahe always knew that they would amount to something great. They used to come to her house when they first started and jammed out for my Kupuna to here and enjoy. I am 16 years old and am 46% Hawaiian and da rest is Hapa. I was born on Oahu and raised on stayed in Waianae until I was 4 mo. then I wen to Kauai where I stayed until I was 15. I miss Hawaii so much (Especially the aloha spirir, the people, da grinds, and the waves). The girl can leave da island but the island no can leave da girl. I shall return one day. I feel Isreal was probably the most profound musician of our time, and the most under-appreciated. With his massive girth and fat he was a living sub-woofer. Although he was terrible at instruments, i feel his voice is great and is extremely good looking. He was an embassador for the pine- apple eatin people, and I vividly remember his blubber hulaing around the stage. He was pimp tight, and fat. Very fat.

It was great to hear "Somewhere Over the Rainbow / What a Wonderful World" in "Finding Forrester" too. I wish he could be around to enjoy the ever-growing interest in his beautiful music.

Although I don't usually pay much attention to the tidbits that AOL posts on their login, I noticed IZ and listened to some of the audio clips and was drawn to his music. I had to go to three stores, but found the cd I wanted, Facing the Future. In the past three days, I have listened to it continuously and shared it with many others who have also been awed by his music. Even now, people who have never heard his music are discovering how moving it can be.

What a positive person Israel was! His music is still a positive force and it will live on just like his spirit. His voice is a sweet, beautiful feeling that caresses the soul and warms the heart.

Aloha

I am new to IZ music after visiting Hawaii for the first time in 2000. I am very sad to learn he is no longer with us in flesh form but his music will help me know him in the spirit form and continue to strenghen my spirituality. Thank you IZ for touching my life.

IZ, many years have passed since we shook hands but I still feel the Aloha, the energy, the love which you preserved in your music, now forever around me. I bought an IZ hat, years ago, which I wear daily, to remind Hawaii, you are still close to my heart. The hat is kind of worn, the color has faded but your spirit will always be close to me. I sometimes get teased about my hat and have been given many new hats to replace the black faded to now, gray but the answer is still the same, I have to keep IZ close to everyone bruddah ever touched with his music. I have to remind everyone, the sacrifices he made for the people, he loved and even though, he is not walking, on this earth, any longer, we will never forget him..Mahalo, we miss you IZ

IZ was the voice of Hawaii in my eyes. I could smell the plumeria, feel the tropical breeze and hear the ocean waves in his voice. He will live on forever in his music. Aloha

The moment I first heard IZ's music I was devoted to finding every note he ever uttered. It took me a while but I believe I have located all of the available recordings and I have only one left to buy, his first. The pleasure I feel in listening to IZ sing is something I am unable to describe in words. I can only say that I hear his music with my soul and it makes me happy.

I share this love of IZ's music with my brother and sister and the older I get the more I understand the value of the lessons and joy he shared with us.

Thank You IZ.

Love, Delores

My husband and I have always had a special connection with the Hawaiian islands. We got married in Kapalua,Maui 5 years ago and have been back many times since then. Israel's music truly captures the spirit of "aloha" and of the islands. His music touches that special place that is sacred and serene. His music shall be with us for always.Considering the present turmoil over the homestead lands, his music reminds us of what was so special about the Hawaiin lands was it's spirit and beauty. The very thing that is being taken away.

Blessings, Kathlee

With the first plunk of the Ukulele on this years e-toys commercial I became obsessed with finding out who posessed this wonderous voice. My son downloaded Somewhere over the rainbow from Napster and bought me Facing Future for Christmas. I played it during Christmas dinner and listen to Iz everyday just for the joy he brings me. I can't explain it. But I share his music with everyone who enters my home and they love him too and they share it with their loved ones and so he lives......

Just saw Finding Forester and heard Over the Rainbow. At home I searched the new for more information. That is how I became a fan of IZ. I am mezmorized by the CD Facing Future. We started traveling to HI in 1991. I am sorry that I did not know about IZ then.

His voice just takes me back to the islands. Hawai'i 78 is the most haunting song I have ever heard. I sing it all the time. When I hear Over the Rainbow, I get chills. What a great talent. What a shame it ended so soon.

I first heard Israel's music on a soundtrack to Finding Forester, from then on I have sought out his music. It brings tears to my eyes knowing he is gone. The Son will always be on him and his family. I am a Deputy Sheriff and his music helps me cope with this World.

The best part of "Finding Forrester" was Iz's version of "Over The Rainbow". After just discovering Israel Kamakawiwo'ole and his music, I was very sad to hear he was gone.

I wanted to let everyone know that when IZ died I cryed for days. When I got married in Sept. of 97 I asked the church to play In dis life as my wedding song. I had so many complements about the uses of that song as my wedding song. When I moved to the mainland (Georgia) in 97 I kept Iz picture in a frame by the front door of my house and when ever I entered it was like I was home in Hawaii. All the Haole visitors I had to my home would ask.... "Who's that?" and I'd tell them " Thats Bruddah Iz...Hawaii's Elvis." We love you and miss you bruddah!

The world lost a "Shining Light", when IZ died. How fortunate that he was with us, if only for a short time!! My son bought me one of his CD's one day, and I was so moved by his voice and his love of life. My first CD was IZ, In Concert. I now own all of his CD's. I start my morning with one of his CD's. I want to share with you, that the reason my son bought that first CD for me, my twin brother died suddenly last year of a massive heart attack. He lived in a small town in Montana, and owned a business, after 11 years of cold etc, he and his wife decided to move to his wife's home in Florida. They sold the house, the business, and they where on their way to Florida! They made it half way to Florida when he died. He wanted more then anything to be on the beach and watch the waves!! Brother IZ, to me embodies that spirit, that my twin had, Aloha for all, love of the land, And even though you are no longer with us, God Bless You Israel for all that you have done, and continue to do. I am crying as I am typing this, but the lesson Israel thaught me "We are only here for a short time, make it count!!!" Mahola Nui. Nancy
